I am 35 wks. Went for a growth scan (all fine). Midwife asks if we know what we are having, we say no its a suprise.

She says you might want to look away when I am looking down there then, I say, "to be fair I probably couldn't tell".

She measures thigh bone ect, so probably can tell, I can't at all.

She then says "oh she wont stay still!! Or he, I don't know"

After the scan she says " She is growing fine and no concerns about how much she moves, ha ha"

Is it safe to say I am having a girl then Grin

Girls are lovely. id still just buy neutral stuff just incase it was a double bluff Mind you I cant imagine not knowing so it must be super annoying when they choose a gender when speaking about the baby. All of my midwives (and I know the sex) refer to baby as baby. X

Don't some hcps refer to all babies as the same because they don't like saying baby or it? I don't know where I heard that but I had a private scan last time and found out I was having a girl then a doctor said he and I had a wobble but that doctor apparently refers to all babies as he. Incidentally, we got all neutral equipment but mostly very stereotypically girlie clothes. I still think it could go either way op.

Certainly won't be rushing out to buy pink! But may pay closer attention to picking a girls name Grin

Could be a double bluff. We're having a surprise, but didn't tell the sonographer this and she gave us a 'tour' of the baby after the anomaly scan. Showed us the brain and the stomach, the spine, the bladder, the bottom, the intestines, the thighs and feet, a lovely view between the legs! So, our surprise is a surprise girl! Unless its a boy with a tiny penis and no noticeable testicles!

My SIL didn't want to know... And was completely double bluffed at her scans. They constantly said she, and she had a boy.

You may be surprised yet. Most sonographers tell you before they scan that they use either he or she to refer to your baby but that it doesn't mean anything, it's just better than saying 'it'.

MummyBex1985 · 10/09/2015 18:59

I think most midwives call babies "she" by default. It probably doesn't mean anything Smile

BakingBunty · 10/09/2015 21:48

I had the same situation. Was being scanned by a doctor rather than sonographer, so I guess less used to keeping schtum! She said 'come out little girl' when our baby was hiding various bits she wanted to measure. I called her out on it and she said it was her default as she had a daughter. Two months later we had... DD!
DH really wanted us to find out after the slip as he found 'sort of knowing' really frustrating. But I'm still glad that we didn't as loved the moment of discovery after birth, even if it wasn't as much of a surprise as it was when we had DS!

Northernlurker · 10/09/2015 21:59

We had a specialist cardiac scan with dd3 as dd2 has a heart defect. At the end the senior sonographer person (can't remember her title but it was in a big teaching hospital and she was clearly highly specialist) told us all looked fine and 'she' would get a good check up after birth too so not to worry. I didn't read anything in to that for the reasons below but dh was convinced it was a girl. And indeed it was Grin

Not necessarily, I remember at my 20 week scan the sonographer said 'she'. We had a boy!

Dixiechick17 · 10/09/2015 22:21

I had a private scan and found out we were having a gir, in my future growth scans they kept referring to her as he which made me super paranoid. I still had a girl :)

ChicaMomma · 11/09/2015 13:17

I think some of them refer to them all as girls, like the way that some people refer to cars as 'she'. Bad analogy i know lol!

Like that, at my 12 week scan the sonographer said ''oh i can tell you now what you are having if you like??''... ok well obviously a boy then if she's so sure so early on! Boy it was!!!
