Glycerin suppositories

So I'm 10 weeks pregnant and suffering majorly with constipation to the point where last night I thought I was going to have to go to A&E I was in so much pain and discomfort. My doctor has prescribed me lactulose which I'm hoping will ease things a little. I've taken 3 doses now but I'm still majorly blocked up (apologies if TMI). Anyway I've seen some articles on the Internet recommending glycerin suppositories but does anyone know if these are safe to use in pregnancy? If so where can I get them and if anyone's used them what are the actual results of it? Does it just make things a bit easier to pass or am I likely to find I'd end up with a nasty bout of diarrhoea instead?

They are on the shelf near other stomach medicines in the supermarket and they work by softening the hard stool that is low down, lubricating the area and slightly irritating to stimulate it being pushed out.

Lie down for a good half an hour to let them work.

My midwife gave me a pack of glycerin suppositories just yesterday and I'm 34 weeks so I assume they are safe.
