I'm up again due to horrible heartburn. I am literally living on gaviscon and it's not easing it tonight. I want it to stop. any advice please.

Drink milk, have plain yoghurt/cottage cheese/cream cheese too. You got any mint tea in? If not get it for next attack. Funnily enough I'm suffering tonight (not pregnant) but brought back memories.

tinyme135 · 09/09/2015 02:54

unfortunately I can't drink milk as I swell up :( I finally got rid of it for about 20 mins then bam it's back

Peppermint really works as a natural addition to your gaviscon. Careful of the sugar-free sweeties though as they can be laxative.

tinyme135 · 09/09/2015 03:06

I'm in two minds to ask for peppermint capsules to take and see if that settles it. I think it doesn't help having ibs either

Are you having the liquid? Double Strength? Nothing else touches the sides for me. I've found I get heartburn after every meal except for chicken for some reason... maybe worth a try for dinner tomorrow? Not suggesting you get up now and cook up a breast... :)

I developed gall bladder problems duting my first pregnancy (not that I am suggesting it's that) but, especially for your last meal of the day, try to keep the meal easy to digest, so your body needs to use less bile (no ice cream before bed etc).
Through the day aim for small meals.
I also used to sleep in a reclining chair when it got really bad. Gravity helps.

I was living on Gaviscon and milk, I never found a cure. Sorry. Flowers

bonzo77 · 09/09/2015 06:04

There are loads of things that the doctor can prescribe that will sort you out properly. Even when pregnant. Get it sorted: in treated reflux can lead to a pre- cancerous condition called barretts oesophagus.

bonzo77 · 09/09/2015 06:04

un treated

ARV1981 · 09/09/2015 06:48

I have been prescribed ranitidine, which stops your stomach producing so much acid. It's safe during pregnancy.

I worked really well, until around 36-37 weeks... then nothing helped except not eating at all after around 5pm. Then my baby 'dropped' so it works again (currently 39 weeks - can see the light at the end of the tunnel!!).

See your GP. It's horrendous and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. Get it sorted, it's not worth the pain and disrupted sleep.

docmcstuffins1 · 09/09/2015 07:17

Your GP can prescribe omeprazole... It's like magic!

duckbilled · 09/09/2015 07:34

Omeprazole is the only thing that helps me, it's great.

lauraa4 · 09/09/2015 09:36

As other two PP have said Omeprazole is the best thing, but can only get from GP.

gemsparkle84 · 09/09/2015 10:20

Try sucking on polos/ other boiled sweets.

tinyme135 · 09/09/2015 12:16

the liquid makes me sick so can't take that. it's the double action tablets I'm taking. I'm already on omeprazole but they told me not to take it if possible. I've tried today eating more frequent but less and nope still in agony. I hate it. getting no sleep is horrible.

Get your GP to prescribe ranitidine or omeprazol. Honestly the best thing ever!! I still sometimes need a swig of gaviscon but 300mg daily of ranitidine has helped no end.

tinyme135 · 09/09/2015 12:54

I'm heading up there now (if I don't fall asleep on the bus haha) I can't survive on 3 hours sleep

Skiptonlass · 09/09/2015 12:59

Seriously, take the olmeprazole. Or the ranitidine (both were available in most supermarkets last time I was in the UK.)

Them telling you not to take it if possible is barmy. You need it, take it.

Runningupthathill82 · 09/09/2015 14:01

Omeprazole! I had that and ranitidine when pg with DS. My heartburn and reflux was so bad it was affecting my asthma, and those tablets were the only thing that touched it.

contractor6 · 09/09/2015 14:06

I couldn't get a doctors appointment for over a week but zantac which is available over counter is brand name of ranitidine, so I took that seems to be working.

tinyme135 · 09/09/2015 14:54

just came out and I wasn't allowed neither cause of the same excuse -.-
