High risk pregnancies - when did you first see a consultant?

I'm considered high risk due to issues with DS' birth weight and birth itself.

I'm now 21 weeks and haven't yet seen a consultant or had an appointment through. My midwife seems to think this is normal. I have no reason to disagree but just wondered when other have had their first consultant appointments in high risk pregnancies?

Cheers.

I was 13 weeks but my problems were to do with helping the pregnancy to continue. As your problems are at the end I suppose you will have to push from your 28 week appointment.

With DD I was 20 weeks and saw the consultant for weight loss due to morning sickness. With DS I saw the consultant at around 12 weeks after first scan as DD suffered brachial plexus injury at birth and so was monitored with DS all the way through. I would ring your midwife and check the referral had gone through. Sometimes these things go 'missing'! Like my referral to the physio for spd and I finally got my one and only appointment the day before I was induced with DS...

Mulligrubs · 08/09/2015 14:45

20 weeks for me

Tftpoo · 08/09/2015 15:02

14 weeks with MCDA twins. Then every 2 weeks until 36 weeks.

wonkylegs · 08/09/2015 15:08

10 weeks for me but the high risk was due to my health not the baby.

AbbeyRoadCrossing · 08/09/2015 15:14

34 weeks here, but moved forward to 33 due to a new different risk.
It depends on the reason you're high risk as others have said. If the potential issues occur later such as at birth, and there's nothing an earlier appointment would do to help then they'll see you later

Brummiegirl15 · 08/09/2015 15:15

14 weeks for me due to previous recurrent miscarriage and seeing consultant every 3 weeks until 21 weeks then not again until 32 (unless instructed)

GoooRooo · 08/09/2015 15:15

21 weeks, after my scan.

worldgonecrazy · 08/09/2015 15:17

10 weeks because I was pregnant with twins.

Feckingfeckfeck · 08/09/2015 15:25

Never! Mine kept cancelling on me, then when she finally called me to offer an appointment, it was too late. I'd been induced due to pre eclampsia!

GlitzAndGigglesx · 08/09/2015 15:32

At 12 weeks with DCDA twins then every 4 weeks until I gave birth

I have been put at high risk due to my health. Didn't know I would need to see a consultant? Suppose it's something to ask at my next appointment. Currently 13 weeks so not worried at the moment and my health is only a minor complication I have been lead to believe (arthritis)
If your worried though you should contact your midwife.

catbertha · 08/09/2015 17:13

I'm seeing mine tomorrow (19+3) after the mid-term scan (which happened this morning). But mine is due to my age and previous health issue. Basically from the look of the responses it looks very variable - so I guess nothing to worry about!

wonkylegs · 08/09/2015 17:20

Sepa - my health condition is RA. If you have inflammatory arthritis it will depend how your disease is whilst you are pregnant and what drugs you are on. Some peoples gets better, some peoples stays the same and unlucky ones like me get worse. When I had DS I was on high dose steroids throughout pregnancy and was still struggling so I got lots of monitoring plus discussions of how the hell I was having the baby which were a moot point when he came early and screwed up the plans. So with pregnancy 2 I was straight in to see the consultant at 10weeks especially as I now have problems with both hips, unfortunately that didn't progress but hoping to get back to the same position with this pregnancy although it's causing terrible flares already and I've only just found out.

Flambola · 08/09/2015 19:28

12 weeks here. High risk due to stillbirth in first pregnancy.

Skiptonlass · 08/09/2015 19:47

34 weeks, which was appropriate for the specific complication involved.

It depends completely on why you need to see the consultant.

sepa · 08/09/2015 19:49

Wonkylegs - I have come off all meds and just had a steroid injection about 6 weeks ago which is making it more manageable. I think you find out around 14 weeks if it's going to get better during I think. I have a rhumy appointment then midwife the day after so I will speak to one of them. I will be 16 weeks by those appointments

poocatcherchampion · 08/09/2015 20:04

25 weeks and they were Hmm at me as the wanted it at 18 weeks but I kept having important work meetings or a nice long hol. (Who runs a clinic only one morning at week,??)

Given it was only for them to recommend an elcs and me to accept it didn't seem important to rush it through. As it was they want to see me again at 34 weeks to set a date. I'm happy to receive that through the post.

Hairballs · 08/09/2015 20:20

Thanks for your replies everyone. Very interesting how they vary. I guess I've probably got nothing to worry about given my issues occurred during delivery but will give my midwife a ring just in case.

I have a n underactive thyroid and heart condition so saw 2 consultants at 14 weeks but won't see anyone again until 32 weeks.

Autumn2014 · 09/09/2015 10:07

I had a preconception appointment and plan put in place to be consultant shared care. First appt with consultant at 10 weeks. I had a pregnancy complication and preterm delivery so need early monitoring for baseline levels.
Do you know if you have actually been referred yet?

BabsUnited · 09/09/2015 12:19

I am almost identical to Autumn. I had preconception counselling and an agreed plan of care, including a procedure at 12/13 weeks (due to previous preterm delivery). My consultant is actually living in the 21st century and I am able to book appointments and discuss things with her by sending her emails! First saw her once I was pregnant at about 10 weeks, then straight after the 12 week scan and then booked the procedure for 3 days afterwards. Will be seeing her every 4 weeks from week 24 (tomorrow).

I'd be chasing that referral if I were you.
