Declining Induction

Hi, I'm a FTM and am currently 9 days overdue. I'm booked in for an induction on Friday - so at 12 days overdue. But I am seriously considering declining this and going for increased monitoring. I just feel that my body has looked after my baby up until now so perhaps I should trust it a while longer and wait for labour to begin naturally. I also really do not like the idea of syntocinon, so I wondered if any mum's out there have accepted the pessary but declined the drip? I'm trying to decide what options are open to me and which are best for me and baby, so would be grateful if others could share the wisdom of their own experience on the matter, and appreciate any advice?

Hard to know the exact date of conception though, surely? As not necessarily the same date you had sex...

I wish I had seriously considered declining induction with my DS. I was induced at 40+13 and I don't think my body was ready. Induction failed and I ended up an EMCS. Currently 20 weeks pregnant with number 2 and I think if every thing goes ok it's def something I'd consider this time round. Good luck x

20 weeks?! Blasted toddler 'helping' me type! I mean 10 lol

I was induced at 10 days over, was scheduled for +12 but another bout of reduced movements meant they brought it forward. I was a FTM too and didn't want to go more than 14 days over due to placenta breakdown. My mum had that with my sis and as well as it being scary the thought of retained products having to be removed is just gross and makes me feel faint.

Anyway, my induction was fab, one pessary and I went from 2cm-delivery in 40 mins.

Good luck OP! Flowers

I had in induction for slightly different reasons - my waters went at 37+1 and I didn't progress.

It was a long process but I gave birth vaginally, no forceps, no ventouse. I did have an epidural but I wouldn't bother again.

All in all a pretty positive experience. I'm currently 37+3 with DC2 and will be begging for an induction at my 39 week appointment with my consultant if the baby hasn't arrived by then!

I was induced at bang on 42 weeks, as I wanted to give baby a chance of coming out naturally but knewof risks past this time. Went in on Friday, failed induction, emcs that almost didn't happen in time due to questionable decisions by registrar on duty. Both baby and I not on a good way afterwards but fine now. I would be very wary of going in for Induction over a weekend due to decreased staffing levels and lower experience levels. Death rates in hospitals increase at weekends for a reason.

citydweller yes, but if you know your cycle then it gives you a good idea. I knew my cycle was dead on 26 days, and the second phase of a cycle after ovulation is 14 days for everyone. So you can work out when you ovulated if you have a regular cycle, so conception would be in a 3-4 day window of that time. The date they gave me I would have still been on my period at conception.

CityDweller · 11/09/2015 10:23

True - if you have a clockwork regular cycle.

Although, that being said, I did genuinely go 14 days over with DC1 as I was absolutely certain of conception (regular cycle, only had sex once during that particular cycle). Some people just take longer to cook their babies...

I had one horrible syntocinon induction with my first and one very good syntocinon induction with my third (2nd baby managed to stick to my birth plan and was born at home in a birth pool!). I didn't have pain refief with
The second induction, kept active and felt very calm. It was a good birth and I'd been dreading it because of my first experience.

If your waters haven't gone to still have the option of the pessary first anyway and at that gestation you are probably more ready to go into labour. I think that part of the issue with my first was that I was just under 38 weeks pregnant and I suspect my waters went as a result of strep b rather than spontaneous labour so my body wasn't actually gearing up for labour and needed a lot of help. With my second induction I was bang on 40 weeks and she was ready to be born.
