Vaccinating cat before baby arrival

I have an outdoor cat who hasn't had any vaccine boosters for a couple of years now. The only illness he's had was cystitis & he stopped getting that once vaccines stopped.

However, I have a baby on the way & was wondering if the cat needed to start again with vaccinations for any protection reasons for the baby?

I'm due in two weeks and have given my cat his routine flea and worming treatment over the past couple of days but nothing else.

I am not aware of anything else they specifically need, my midwife knows I have a cat and hasn't said anything.

There's very little the cat could pass to baby or you, other than toxoplasmosis, which they don't vaccinate against. Flea and worm it and you'll be fine (I have 3 outdoor moggies!)

Honestly, I feel more sorry for your cat...! Why are you not giving her the vaccination boosters?

toohardtothinkofaname · 08/09/2015 17:26

Because he was more ill when he was getting them & it was horrible to see him stressed & poorly. He's not had any ailment during the few years he hasn't been vaccinated so no need to feel sorry him, he's fine..Hmm

Thanks Laura & Junosmum; he's regularly wormed & flea treated so will keep up with that. Will mention to midwife too when I'm next in just to check. I'd consider asking a vet but dubious as to their motives as of course, they make a lot of money from treatments...

Yes your poor cat what a horrible cat owner you must be Grin Grin

I honestly think you, baby and the cat for that matter will be fine. The only thing that is an absolute no no is coming into contact with cat poo so just make sure it stays away from your bed etc.

Our cat has the life of Riley! I'd feel more sorry for my other half who gets less attention haha.

The cat litter is outside in its own little hut and our cat leaves no mess in the house apart from balls of fluff that gets hoovered daily (and I'll probably go overboard with when little one arrives)

Thanks guys!

toohard I am a vet. With regards to vaccinating, your cat can't pass anything to you or your baby that can be vaccinated against. The things that cats can rarely pass to humans can't be vaccinated against. Worming is the most important thing for cats being around children.

toohardtothinkofaname · 09/09/2015 21:26

Thanks for your response Rufus. Will make sure I keep ontop of worming!

I have nothing to contribute to this, but...

...you hoover EVERY DAY? Who does this? Blush

Junosmum · 09/09/2015 21:45

Cloud jumper- because my best friend is a vet and said the only evidence for boosters is that the vaccines are only tested for effectiveness for 2 years, unlike human ones which are tested for 20years for effectiveness. Imagine having to have tetanus booster every year, or your mmr.

zannyminxoxox · 11/09/2015 05:43

I have a cat she has never had injections, she is 9 now, although I do flea and worm her regularly. I think as long as you are doing the fleaing and worming then your baby will be fine my two have been Smile and I hoover everyday tooBlush

BeautifulBatman · 11/09/2015 05:46

TreeSparrow I do. Sometimes twice a day. I have 5 cats and I like a tidy house. I also quite like vacuuming anyway.

toohardtothinkofaname · 11/09/2015 07:25

Treesparrow, I don't Hoover the full house every day, just downstairs where the cat goes. He's a ginger longhair so if I didn't it just feels a bit manky.

I do the full house maybe once a week because we're not upstairs much apart from sleeping & getting ready Smile
