Lucozade -- how much should I drink

I've got my glucose test thing this afternoon and have been told to drink a 'can' of lucozade an hour before the test -- all I can find in the shops though are big bottles of lucozade. Does anyone know exactly how much you're meant to drink? If I measured out 330ml would that be about right? Worried about drinking too much or too little and so getting a false result!

Yes I would say 330ml and tell them thats how much you have had when you get there.
Good luck.

urrrrmmm........................IME you don't drink the lucozade until your have had blood taken and in that case its supplied by the hospital......

I had one a few weeks ago was told to eat nothing from 12 hours before the test so in my case from 8.30pm till 8.30am the next day. I had blood taken (fasting blood levels) from 8.30am ish and THEN was given a drink of lucozade to drink asap. I then had to wait 2 hours from fnishing the drink till they took blood again to see how my body coped with gloucose.

I would say that you may have messed the test up..?? If you have drunk lucozade yourself before blood was taken then how do they know what your fasting levels are..? We you not given a number to contact for enquiries..??

Who told you to drink lucozade yourself BEFORE the test.?

of course you have to drink the lucozade before you have the blood test taken!!!. I don't know the amount, but ring up nhs direct or your midwife. you need to drink a certain amount - but guessing won't do!
hope it goes well

this is your 28 week test isn't it?
has to be original lucozade, not sugar free or anything like that

shhhh · 28/11/2006 16:26

BUT what I am saying is that blood has to be taken 1st to see what your blood levels are when fasting..!!!! THEN you drink lucozade or a gloucose drink (as I also did with my 1st pregnancy) AND THEN after 2 hours more blood is taken to check levels.!!

Otherwise what do they have to compare the test result to..??

lulumama · 28/11/2006 16:27

i think rather than guessing and second guessing...call the midwife before doing anything at all...or you might have to have all the tests again...

GTT test

SachaF · 28/11/2006 16:35

Shhhh,

It depends how the test is done. My hospital asked me to fast for 12-14 hrs, drink the glucose drink they supplied me with (or a set quantity of original lucozade) and then have the blood test exactly 2 hours later. They never took my fasting levels. I am aware that normally it would be two blood tests, but it depends on how the hospital works.

Sorry lalibela, I can't remember how much original lucozade it was as I used the supplied powder, but I do remember it being more than 1 normal bottle (which I think is 250 ml). A can is usually 330 mls.

sacha, thanks but sounds bizarre..! No idea how they do that as nothing to compare and looking at NHS site aftre it even says 2 tests...Oh well maybe it is a case of different hospitals BUT I have never heard of them asking you to supply the drink..!?? How can they be sure you drank it all or drank the right amount or even the right drink..??!!

I must be under good care at a good hospital .

lalibela · 28/11/2006 21:18

Thanks everyone! 330 ml turned out to be the right amount and as it was a preliminary glucose screen I didn't need to fast beforehand.

oh that's good!
shhh- I've had 3 children and I had to supply drink every time - had detailed instructions on exactly what to do - you could have them to supply the drink, but you'd have to go in and wait for the hour after you had drunk it -and there wasn't any fasting apart from the 1 hour after you had the lucozade. maybe a different test and not the 28 week bloods.

shhhh · 29/11/2006 10:49

mmm maybe. Mine was the gtt and I had them done at around 28 weeks. Maybe different NHS's trying to cut costs .

Hey ho. Glad all went well in the end lalibela
