Can I change my midwife?

I'm due my next midwife appointment later this month and I'm dreading it. My midwife was okay the first time I went until she had to take blood and it was the worst experience ever. She was rubbish at it and tried both arms with many attempts and I ended up crying (every nurse I've seen since at scans has done a fab job). The second time I saw her she was really really grubby - her hair hadn't been washed in a while, she was really greasy and smelly. I don't want to be mean but I don't think I can see her again, especially not if I need more bloods taken. I didn't want her to touch me and I wanted to leave the room. What's the best way of going about getting a different midwife tactfully? I don't want to upset her but I just can't see her.

Contact the Supervisor of Midwives at the local maternity unit and discuss it with them. You might have to change clinic times if you change midwives - if you see the midwife at the GP surgery, for example, there will probably only be one clinic a week delivered by the same midwife so you might need to go to appointments at the hospital instead
