Help - surgery in pregnancy

Any advice v welcome as I'm completely out of my depth here. I'm in a general hospital in a large town (ie not a big teaching hospital) and at nearly 11 weeks pregnant have been diagnosed with a large dermoid ovarian cyst which is giving severe pain. I've been told it has to be removed in pregnancy, either tomorrow if the pain doesn't settle down, or ideally at 20 weeks because the risk of miscarriage is much lower then. So far, I'm ok with this plan and know there are risks to the baby at having surgery at 11 weeks but equally can't cope with the pain.

My question is this: I'm not very confident in this hospital. It's not a teaching hospital and doesn't seem to have specialists in surgery on pregnant women. The consultant said they can do the procedure as well as anyone else, but couldn't give me any indication of how big the risk of miscarriage is for surgery at this stage. Is it a good idea to transfer to a bigger hospital? I'm thinking about somewhere like Leeds, which at least talks about a maternal fetal medicine specialism on their website. Any other hospital recommendations? Also, what are my rights in requesting a transfer for treatment?

Any advice/pointers you can give would be very welcome. I've seen mn be fantastic in these kinds of situations before and need some more info to help us make our decision.

Is Leeds closest to you? Does your hospital have a fmu (fetal medicine unit) at all. I had to have laser ablation surgery whilst pregnant and I was sent to a completely different hospital (I had consultants at my local hospital, Southampton and was sent to st Georges in London for the surgery. I would go to where you feel most comfortable and it doesn't sound as though you feel very comfortable with this choice. Xx

A friend of mine had a cyst removed at 7 weeks pregnant and was warned of risks to the baby but baby survived she now has a happy 19 months old baby and is pregnant again even though she now only has 1 ovary x
