Possible heart defect at 26 week scan

During the week we got the scary news that our baby might have a heart defect. The scan showed that one valve could be smaller/bigger than the other. The Consultant is referring us to a fetal cardiology specialist in Dublin (we live 3 hours away) to make sure and see where we go from there. We're now waiting on an appointment. Nothing showed up in the anatomy scan a few weeks ago so we thought everything was okay, now it feels like our world has been turned upside down. Just so scared as to what this could mean. Has anyone been in a similar situation? So worried Sad

Frogsong I was told something similar-ish dd, but hers was that one section of her pulmonary artery was enlarged.

Repeated scans up until birth. We even had to switch hospitals to one that could help her if her artery 'kinked' when she was born.

When she was born she had a scan and her heart was absolutely fine.

But even if it wasn't I took some small comfort from the reassurance that they can really do some amazing things these days with tiny hearts!

Just got to the update.

Fantastic news!!! Flowers

Really good to read the update Smile
My dd2 has pulmonary stenosis, not picked up on scan (this was 15 years ago) and diagnosed at 6 weeks. It's never caused her problems and shouldn't do so fortunately. I think we will get an appointment this year for the last time for paeds cardiology and then I'm not sure whether they even follow up as adults.
Just want to echo what others have said too. The world of paediatric heart surgery and cardiology has seen massive changes in the last couple of decades and the outcome for children with even very serious defects is now really good. I read an article a while ago which quoted a specialist as saying that now they hardly ever have to say they are sorry but there's nothing they can do and that's a huge change from a few years ago.

That's very true northernlurker. While we are relieved that all seems fine, if it wasn't at least these days amazing things can be done. Especially after seeing the Specialists and how amazing they are. I guess the biggest relief for us is that our little baby won't have to go through what we thought they might be facing. I think a piece of me will still worry slightly that there is still something as it is very slightly enlarged but they couldn't find anything wrong so I'll have to put my trust in them. But I'll make sure my Consultant is very thorough at all my check ups and afterwards. Just for peace of mind. But we are so relieved.

HappyBeet86 that's great to hear all was well with your DD, it is an indescribable feeling to hear those words.
