Bleeding/sore gums in Pregnancy.

I'm having a real nightmare with sore bleeding gums at the moment Sad

I am fastidious with my teeth. I floss every night, I am using a special toothpaste for gum problems plus a mouth wash especially formulated for bleeding gums and inflammation. I've also recently started some holistic thing where you swill coconut oil round your mouth for twenty minutes a day as some people online swear by it.

I am 17 weeks and also take aspirin and Fragmin each day which I imagine isn't helping.

Anyone had similar and found a remedy, I'm scared in going to end up losing some teeth at this rate.

My dentist told me bleeding gums are normal in pregnancy. If you are worried see your dentist/ hygienist, it's free in pregnancy! And for the year after birth. Try using corsodyl mouth wash.

See your dentist & take proper advice. Have your hygiene appointments routinely. Gum disease is horrible & you don't want to get there via pregnancy sore gum problem.

I see my hygienist every 4-6 months and my gums were perfect. No fillings either. It's so frustrating. I'm due to see the hygienist again in
September.

I suffer from terrible sore bleeding gums while I'm pregnant. Your dentist will probably recommend to keep up with your current routine as it sounds like you're doing a fab job. You'll be pleased to know that it disappears almost immediately after birth (I'm talking within days).
If it's any consolation, my mum lost 3 teeth when she was pregnant with me because of the stupid hormones, so I'm glad it's only bleeding gums I've got! Grin

In England you get free dental NHS care when pregnant. Get yourself a check up pronto. (You can apply for the Maternity Exception Certificate in the meantime, it covers treatment a month before issue too)

I am due to go very soon but I don't see what they can do that I'm not already doing. I go so regularly I send my hygienist Christmas cards lol

I missed my hygienist app. In march as i was feeling so sick with the nausea but i went to see the hygienist a couple of months late in may. It was a blood bath but after it was much better and the bleeding has mostly stopped. Have a follow up in nov after my baby is born due in october. Its normal in pregnancy despite prior good hygiene. Hope it gts better for you soon.

Ember I'm really glad things are better for you. I am reduced to eating soup and bland wet foods at the moment as I can have a good day, then eat some fruit or crunchy bread and the whole thing starts again Sad

The reason dental appts are free in pregnancy is precisely because you're more likely to have bleeding gums and other complications.

Whoknewitcouldbeso · 05/09/2015 22:24

I never had any problems with my son's pregnancy, so this had surprised me.

OP I have the same despite similarly fastidious habits. The dentist told me it's because pregnancy hormones make your gums react more sensitively to plaque. It sounds like you're doing all the right things so the likelihood is you'll be fine and it'll all clear up after birth Smile It's not pleasant though!

Whoknewitcouldbeso · 06/09/2015 10:58

I'm also taking Fragmin to protect the placenta which means you bruise and bleed more easily. I suspect it is this that it exacerbating it Sad

I went to the dentist with bleeding gums too and he said it's important to keep brushing and flossing despite the bleeding and use a softer brush if it helps.

Whoknewitcouldbeso · 07/09/2015 12:04

Thanks ejcle. It's excellent for my diet as I am only eating broth and vegetables at the moment as anything else is setting my gums off. I am continuing to gloss very gently and use an electric toothpaste on low with a new soft brush.
