Sharp pains and tightenings

I've been having sharp pains all day and they feel like they are right inside my vagina, I think I've read it described as like sitting on a knitting needle. I've also been getting tightenings which aren't painful but are uncomfortable and get very hard. I lost part of my plug today as well, just a small part though this morning. Any ideas if this could be the start of labour or just normal as I'm 33 weeks and have already had complications with my waters leaking since 22 weeks and on bedrest, I am allowed to do a little more now I'm further on and everything has been stable with the fluid levels though. The baby is about 5lb 2 as of Thursday when I had another growth scan. What do you think?

hi jodie. not sure i can be of any help, but i get those sharp vaginal pains and have since being just a few weeks preg. dont think they are anything to worry about. the tightenings are sure to be just braxton hicks. just rest and phone your midwife if you are still worried tomorrow.

someone with more of an idea will come along in a mo!

missed the part about the plug. are you sure its part of that or just some thicker discharge? i s this your 2nd preg?

could be SPD related...and as baby nestles down into the pelvis ready for birth..you get all sorts of pains and aches and niggles.

as you have had a complex pregnancy , with the threat of premature labour..i;d call the midwife at some point, maybe in the morning..or labour ward tonight if you are getting concerned..

5 lb 2 is a brilliant weight for this gestation....are you leaking any more fluid ?

sounds like braxtons too....

lulumama · 26/11/2006 21:18

what did you show look like?

egypt · 26/11/2006 21:25

ah yes, thinking about it i remember when dd's head was beginning to engage i would feel a sort of sharp grinding in the pelvic bone. not nice at all.

Thanks. This is my 3rd pregnancy so you'd think I'd know by now lol. He's on the 95th centile I think and I was tested for gestational diabetes on Friday because of his weight too as they think it could be that. I don't ave SPD but I do

get pelvic girdle pain which I was seeing a physio for before the bedrest. I've been thinking that if I'm still like this in the morning that I'll call the hospital, unless it gets worse of course. I am pleased that he is a good weight already as I

know that gives him a much better chance, even though that worries me a little as I'm scared I'll end up needing a c section if he's too big. I think I'm quite a worrier though.

The plug wasn't blood stained, it looked like when I started losing my plug with ds, mucousy, stringy and globby. I think with ds I gradually lost it over about a week but I was in pre labour for a week or so with him also.

Forgot to say that the fluid had been leaking until about a week ago when it seems to have stopped. I've been getting loads of normal discharge instead though. I have had days without leaking fluid only to have it start up again so I'm waiting to see what happens with that.

i'm sure you have been advised when to call or go into hospital...sounds like head engaging and pre labour possibly..esp if you have had a show..but that could mean a wait of a week or more..as you know!! keep an eye on things and call if you need the midwife...

Yep they have told me if temp rises, feel ill etc which would be related to infection as I'm at risk of that with waters gone.

It's these tightenings that I never know what to do with, I don't want to go in and waste their time if it's nothing but also don't want to be in labour and here as it's early still for the baby.

It's so difficult to know what to do even though I've done it twice. I spent the last couple of weeks with ds in and out of hospital with contractions whih were early labour so having been there done that I'm a bit more reluctant to go in.

you are the best judge of when you will need to go in or call! extra reassurance at this stage is nothing to feel bad about!

WestCountryLass · 26/11/2006 22:28

I did not have early rupture of membranes but I experienced similar symptoms and it was the onset of labour but the only way to know is either to wait and see if the tightenings become more regular or to go and get checked out, personally I would get checked out with your history.

Do you need antibiotics before labour? Have you had the steroids?
