Hi,

I've been looking through Dr Fosters birth unit guide to start working out which London and Thanet hospitals I should look at booking in to. I'm having to look at he two areas as I'll be moving to Margate in the new year from London. But as yet not sure of dates. If I can't find anywhere in Margate that I feel comfortable with I will have the opportunity to stay in London. But seeing as I know nothing about any of the units, I don't know where to start.

Is there a section on mumsnet that discusses the pros and cons of hospitals? I'm thinking of getting a doula and an independent midwife, so would need somewhere that can fit that in.

I'm due in August, so if I make it, I've got some time yet.

Thanks

Lou

I'd talk to your doula/independent midwife over the phone & see if there's a hospital they can recommend personally - they'll have lots of experience of different ones. But wherever you book, I'd recommend it's VERY easy driving distance. You don't want a long journey stuck in traffic when you're in labour believe me! Personally I went private in London (John & Lizzy's). They were wonderful, but it is expensive. A friend had her baby at the Royal Free, Hampstead in Heath Birth Centre & she said they were very good too (and free !) Good luck whereever you go...

would you be able to give an indication of a 'ball park' figure (is it ball park or ball part? am never sure)? 'all inclusive'..?

My vote is for Queen Charlotte. They can accommodate both a medical and a natural one, so you have lots of options. And... they are free. (sorry don't know where Margate is so it might not be anywhere near. QC is in Hammersmith)

This site Birth Choice UK is helpful for finding out what is available in any given area. Hope it helps.
