I want to clear up all the misinformation there is about iron levels during pregnancy, this applies to all women not just those who want home births. I had a home birth with my last child but I had to fight hard because my iron levels were low (8.4 just before I gave birth). I dug my heels in and got my home birth. I had a healthy baby girl weighing just over 9lbs with no haemorrhaging after the birth.
The point is that iron levels vary from woman to woman what may be low for one individual may be perfectly normal for another. Many health authorities tend to be very inflexible with regard to iron levels despite the fact that they are told they should be more relaxed about them. The pressure put on pregnant mums by midwives who don't keep up with their studies can lead to stressful pregnancies which is surely not good for mum or baby.
This is not to say you should neglect iron levels, you should try to eat a balanced diet with iron taken in as natural form as possible i.e. fruit, vegetables, meat etc. The body absorbs iron much more easily this way than it does the inorganic iron sulphate tablets that GPs prescribe without causing unwanted constipation. Failing that you could take Spatone as has been mentioned on other threads and/or Floradix (a natural form of iron) liquid or tablets. Also check these links:
