constipation...TMI

I am really struggling with constipation. Been doing a lot of traveling which I think makes it worse, flying, different food etc. Anyway I was quite constipated for about a week just doing very small poos maybe 2-3 over the course of the week. Then woke up with horrible cramps and spasms in my belly. Ended up with horrible liquid diarrhoea. After that its back to constipation and I'm thinking its only a matter of time now before the cramps start and I'm in a cycle. I was told i have IBS by a gynaecologist who did my laparoscopy but it was never an issue before. Im seeing my midwife on Monday but wondering should i see the GP about this and get something for it? Anyone have any experience with this? Sorry for the TMI Blush

Sorry to hear you are suffering, constipation can be horrendous. If you have IBS, I really think you should discuss this with your midwife who should be able to advise you if you need to see the GP.
I am suffering quite badly with constipation, and my midwife prescribed me lactulose. However, I found that it didn't have great effects, other than giving me bad wind, so I am now drinking a glass of prune juice every evening and add dried prunes to my cereal in the mornings, together with a tablespoon of linseeds. Dried figs and apricots are also meant to help, as is blackstrap molasses. But I really don't know if any of those remedies are advisable if you do have IBS.

Oh, but do make sure that you drink lots and lots of water, if anything.

I've suffered from horrible constipation earlier in my pregnancy and really never appreciated normal bowel movements until then!
I don't suffer from ibs, and I think other posters offered good advice to check it over with your midwife as first point of call. But upping you'd water intake will definitely help soften things a bit.
I combatted mine by having a glass of prune juice in the morning and sprinkling some All Bran on my morning cereal, having dried apricots to snack on during the day and then another glass of prune juice before bedtime. I'm militant with my water intake too. And thankfully it's eased off a bit now at 29 weeks. But I do have awful indigestion instead!

Thanks for the advice I think I need to try more with the prune juice and so on. I bought some oat bran today too, but I prob my have not been doing enough. I'll see what the midwife thinks on Monday too.

I'm eating more fruit and it's helping. Grapes and oranges help

I've had terrible constipation with two of my pregnancies due to taking high dose iron supplements. I was prescribed lactulose (sp?) for one and fibre gel for the other. They both worked but I found the fibre gel fast and effective and you can buy it over the counter. Good luck - hope you get some relief soon!
