i'd planned on a home-birth.midwife sent me for a scan at 36, weeks.radiographer told me baby was at least 9lb 8oz,ouch,I thought, they warned me off home birth, which i was looking forward to.went into labour at 39 weeks, very quick and intense 4 hour labour(in hospital),imaging a huge baby, and dd was 7ib 13oz at term!how can they get it so wrong. It affected my labour coz i thought she was a lot bigger which disempowered me in transition stage. if anyone else has experience like this,i'd love to hear from you.

Yes they were tryign to bully me into 37 week induction as they thought I had obstetric cholestasis and I knew I didn't...
Told me dd would be 10lbs
So say I - my mum is smaller than me and gave birth to a 11 lber at home. No worries.
dd was 7lb 8oz

I'm 5'2" and size 8. dh is 5'7" and thin as a whippet. at 38 weeks with ds i measured 42 and midwife said that it was coz i'm so small. ds wouldn't engage. he kept popping back up. doc who admitted me to hospital for birth said he wanted a scan coz of my size. midwife said there was no point. ds was 9lb2 1/2 and was delivered by ecs. i knew he was a big baby all along. yopu know best!!
ps i also have a size 2 shoe

a scan is only as good as the view the technican gets, and there is enormous room for operator error. In addition, if there is a suspected problem, the baby can also fail to gain as much weight as predicted in the last 4 weeks.

Mine was bang on, but they missed a previa - twice. The OB was not amused as he was merrily slicing away during my CS!

sadly this is quite common, which is why I refused a late scan to assess size with ds3...with ms I had one, the scan was done on the Wendesday and I was told the Baby was just reaching 5Ibs, well, ms was born on Saturday, so, only a few days later, lol, and he was 7Ibs 14oz...I doubt he had grown that much in a few days, lol...it wasn't an issue for me,as such, BUT it should me just how useless those scans are, and as I wanted to reduce the amount of scans I had with ms, I refused that late one!

My ds1 was born at 41 weeks weighing 5lb 13, at a scan two weeks before birth we were told he would be about seven and half pounds

I had a late scan last time as dd didn't engage, they predicted her weight to be almost 10lbs, also said she had a huge head and little body. She was born weighing 8lbs 4oz and perfectly proportioned.

I'm now pg again and convinced they measured her too small on the dating scan and I'm a couple of weeks further on than they think I am.

At 3pm I was told my 38 week old baby was going to be 7lb 12 oz. He was born at 7.01pm that same day and was 6lb 12.5oz. I had polyhydromnious so had lots of fluid.

I was scanned at 38 weeks 'cos my MW thought my baby had stopped growing and referred me to the obstetrician. I was seen by the consultant, who calculated that my baby was going to be under 5lb, and insisted that I be induced the next morning. He scared me witless by mentioning things like oxygen starvation and possible need for her to be in the special baby unit. 36 hours later, dd turned up by emergency c-section weighing in at 6lb13, with an apgar of 9. I still wonder if I would have been able to bring her into the world naturally if I had not been induced...
