GD induction question

Hi all, I'm 26 weeks and have GD. I was told long ago they won't let me get past my due date and I'll be induced. I wonder when exactly does it take place? 38 weeks bang on or sometimes 39? Or even 40? If it's decided individually, what does it depend on? I'm on insulin 4 times a day atm. Thanks in advance!

I had GD and was told I would be induced at 38wks but possibly would have been 40wks had I been not been 41 at the time. DD ended up arriving at 35wks so induction wasn't needed in the end. I guess it will depend on your sugar levels, general health and that of the baby as you near your due date...

I've been told 40 weeks because I'm diet controlled, the placenta looks healthy and baby is actually now measuring small. If I was on medication or baby was very big it would of been 38 though. Currently 38+1 and hoping he turns up before the induction. I'm definitely ready for him to arrive now.

They wanted to induce me at 38 weeks but because of DPs work/ leave I asked to be induced at 39 weeks. My consultant said they don't like leaving it until full term. I was on metformin and also diet controlled and baby was born 7lb 7 .

I had GD controlled with metformin. They started the induction process at 39+2 but he didn't arrive till his due date and despite all the pressure to have an induction due to the risks of getting to my due date, once I was in hospital I was at the bottom of the priority list (which I do sort of understand) for a labour ward bed. To me it felt like the risks disappeared once they had got me in the door (hardly any monitoring for example, no one interested in sugar levels or listening to baby or blood pressure etc). Next time if they want to induce I will be pushing for a date as late as possible and some reassurances about the benefits of being in the hospital all the time rather just regular appointments.

Thank you all. I'd like to try and make it as late as possible too. Let's see what they say!

Ask them more at your appointments, maybe?

Are they happy with your bloods? How is baby size? It'll be something they keep under review depending on how you're (both) doing. Though hospital 'standard operating procedure ' good to know too; so you can try to influence if you feel it doesn't work/ meet your needs! (Eg my hosp automatically classes me as high risk via of GD which = no birthing pool. But have got Drs to agree it'll depend on baby size @ the time - ie not an automatic rule out!)

I'm 37+5, just on mat leave and about to start operation oxytocin to try and maximise chances of avoiding an induction: apt Tuesday & how big baby's got will be key.

Good luck!

I have GD but it's diet controlled and baby is fine in size according to scans. So they won't induce me until 41 weeks, and even then I can refuse and request extra monitoring instead. They induce GD women for various reasons, including baby's increased abdominal size, reduced functionality of the placenta in GD, and how well controlled your blood sugar is (which affects these other things anyway). So if you want to avoid induction and avoid early induction, work super hard to keep your blood sugars as even as possible! Best of luck Smile

Also be careful in how you interpret the language they use - they won't let me go past my due date, for example. They can and will make recommendations, but ultimately it's your choice. Read the NICE guidelines on GD and you will be much more able to have a level conversation with them rather than being 'told' what's happening which can be very disempowering and stressful.

I was induced at 39 but they only picked up on my GD at 36 weeks so DS2 was big. He was 9lb 6 at 39 weeks. I was on metformin.

Thank you for the great advices and info.

Thewebbleyjess, I'm going to ask them in 2 weeks when I see them next! The baby's size is normal at the moment, my sugars are mostly under control, but it's extremely hard to keep them so and I do get a high sometimes. Not because I break the diet, but because the numbers keep creeping up even when I eat exactly the same food... So I have to increase insulin doses constantly to keep up...

It really makes sense to work extra hard on them to avoid induction. Going to keep trying Sad
