Thought I'd see if anyone was interested in a thread about running (and other exercise) while pregnant? It brings up some unique issues, such as how many bras do you need to wear to comfortably jog!

I'm training to do the Great North Run in 4 weeks' time (the day before my booking appointment) and would be great to have some other running mums-to-be to talk to :-)

Cloud/Yorkshire - I've got some maternity gym wear, a fittamamma top with bump support, and some fittamamma capris. They're great but, tbh, I'm finding Decathlon yoga capris (with the foldover top) and baggy vests just as comfortable. And a fifth of the price! Would highly recommend Decathlon stuff.

I'm also using all my old race t shirts (well, the technical ones, not the cotton ones) which used to be big and baggy but are now snug. Knew they'd come in use at some point.

I haven't managed much running all week, am starting to struggle now at 18 weeks. Doesn't help that my pelvic floor was shot anyway, after DSs forceps birth. Still managing parkrun though, and did a decent hilly four miles last weekend.

Like others, I'm just hoping to keep going as long as I can! Goals for this week? Erm...two slow runs, a circuits class and a parkrun. I'm now seven minutes slower than my pb Blush

oneyorkshirepud · 22/08/2015 11:01

Ha! Also wearing race t shirts here, so comfy! Will have a look at Decathlon for joggers, ta.

Curlywurlies · 22/08/2015 13:25

Good to hear about the decathlon gear, will check that out.

Running I hear you - today my Parkrun (my new personal worst!) was 8 minutes slower than my PB! Very happy to be running at all though. Was sort of (silently!) talking to my bump during the run, it felt fun!

babybat · 22/08/2015 15:38

I've had some success finding sportswear in Gap - they have nice leggings in the maternity range and the non-maternity Gap Fit t-shirts in L/XL are good if you like a loose fit (I was a 12 pre-pg) as they're wicking, not cotton, which I always find gets gross and clammy when you sweat, and a good length. I'm still cycling at 16 weeks and my normal capris have a wide waistband so sit comfortably under the bump for now.

Runningupthathill82 · 28/08/2015 13:34

How are we all doing, runners? GNR training on track, Sophia?

I'm really struggling, done two runs of 2/3 miles this week, but I'm so big and uncomfortable now that it's tough!

SaltySeaBird · 28/08/2015 14:42

Well I've taken to volunteering as tail runner at ParkRun for a few weeks so I can hide the fact my times are expanding as quickly as my boobs and stomach!

Apart from ParkRun I've been incredibly lazy and not run at all!

luceeann · 29/08/2015 07:08

This is a brilliant thread thanks. I'm a regular cross fitter. This is generally high intensity functional training. For the past 2 months I had been training 6 times a week about 90 minutes a session. It includes cardio, weight training and some gym moves such as pull ups and handstands.
Needless to say my BFP has made me pull back a little. I am training 4-5 days per week and for reduced times, but mostly just throttling back a little. I try to ensure I can speak throughout, keep hydrated and don't overheat.
Does anyone else out there crossfit?

Runningupthathill82 · 29/08/2015 07:37

I don't crossfit, Luceean, but I still do circuits and body pump. In Pump I've decreased the weight a little, and am careful not to do rotational stuff on the and section.
Circuits can be more tricky because I'm struggling with the pelvic floor on stuff like burpees and high knees, now I'm so big (though I did have issues anyway, after DSs birth). I just do what I can!

Anyone else parkrunning this morning? I'm doing a cross country course which is all on grass and trails. Going to be a muddy one!

Runningupthathill82 · 29/08/2015 07:39

That was meant to read the abs section!
And yes, basic rules - don't push it further than you're comfortable with, don't do anything new, make sure you don't overheat.

luceeann · 29/08/2015 13:11

Thanks for the guidance. I hit the gym this morning and feel great for it. To soon for issues with movements getting in the way of my belly...only 5 weeks gone. Will be interesting to see how things progress assuming everything sticks.

Well done to everyone else for getting out and park running or just running in general. I reckon it will help our babies in the long term...

Frescoed · 29/08/2015 16:06

Lots of impressive exercise/sport going on here, blimey! I'm just into third trimester and managed to hold on to a couple of circuit classes and a couple of Olympic weightlifting classes a week, with some modifications etc. Ended up just wearing some bigger t shirts and buying a larger size in gym tights (still fit into some gym trousers). It's been great to carry on, I'm not breaking any personal records or anything, but I've really appreciated holding on to the routine.

TriJo · 29/08/2015 18:50

Have decided as of yesterday that it's time to stop cycling outside - will still be using my turbo trainer though. Just feel very vulnerable on the bike, even in somewhere like the Regent's Park outer circle. Bump isn't in the way yet at only ten and a half weeks, but my bib shorts felt very full in front!

I'll still get plenty of mileage out of running, swimming, yoga and strength training though :)

mountaingirl01 · 30/08/2015 08:18

I stopped on the bike outside at 22weeks, like you jo I just felt too unsafe! Day after bfp I did a big 156mile ride (that had been planned for ages) but then stuck to being with my club as I felt more visible. I just couldn't run in second trimester as I felt so awful, but started pottering a bit again in the third..I even got in the pool (I hate swimming) and was swimming 3 times a week, but spd hit this week and I now can't even walk my usual 2 miles to the village :( its really getting me down.

Clothing wise, I've been wearing a supportive bump band from JoJo and my normal running capri's as 'underbump' with old race shirts (running bet you never thought you'd wear them either?) Thankfully I haven't had a huge increase in boob size, so only had to buy one new bra. Weirdly I got more boob pain on the bike than running.. Possibly the cold rather than the jiggle?!

Runningupthathill82 · 30/08/2015 08:22

Not only did I never think I'd wear them, but I certainly never thought they'd be too small!
The length is becoming an issue now - in my Lakeland Trails tops there's an inch of uncovered bump at the bottom, when I wear my ordinary running capris as underbump. Not the most flattering of looks!

Managed a sub 30 parkrun yesterday - just - but I really do think it might be my last. Weeing myself a bit is NOT fun Blush

mountaingirl01 · 30/08/2015 17:26

Definitely recommend a supportive band - it also doubles up as extra coverage!

Runningupthathill82 · 30/08/2015 17:56

I'm definitely tempted to get one. Only problem with a supportive band is it presses on my bladder even more, and makes the wee stops even more pressing!

mountaingirl01 · 30/08/2015 22:01

lol too true! As I've got bigger the toilet issue has got worse and worse, almost had to 'do a Paula' the other week Blush

I remember running sob normally super keen runner, cyclist and climber. I seem to be further on than lots of you do thought I'd share what it's been like for me. Was super fit at start after 6weeks of cycle touring and running well and carried on as normal until 6 weeks when I got hit by a wall of narcolepsy and nausea. I went from 3 hour fell runs feeling amazing to being bed bound! Was very much in the mind that pregnancy is not an illness so should just carry on as normal, but body gave me zero choice :-( had 6 weeks of doing barely anything and then a period where I could go running for an hour and feel great, but the next day couldn't get out of bed. Also went up two cup sizes and felt totally overwhelmed by breasts, better with a new sports bra. At about 15 weeks I felt like going climbing again but couldn't justify buying a maternity harness. At about this point too I started running again, mainly just up to an hour and throughout I cycled, mainly for transport but also went (easy technical wise!) Mountain biking to about 20 weeks. Have kept cycling up until now, but running I stopped at 26 weeks as it got to the point where it didn't feel like it was doing me any good and I kept getting diarrhoea :-( and finding it painfull running downhill. Went on holiday to the Alps at 30 seeks and that was amazing as heart rate equal to running dragging myself up to 3000m, but none of the shaking about, also arms got a look in using poles. Currently 39 weeks, cycled last week but feeling very limited now, hips achey and braxton hicks all the time so have set sport aside for now. Could still cycle for transport but a bit tired to purposely go out, kind of all about the birth now. Very much looking forward to running afterwards though!!! We have brought a Thule Chariot as our "buggy" :-) I found tkmaxx had some big strechy tech vests but struggled for shorts. Good luck everyone with all the running!! It's really nice to see a thread about it as most people seem to think it's a crazy idea. (Sorry for such a long post!)
