Placenta Praevia

Hello,

I'm sure this has been done before and I know it's not uncommon, but... I'm 20+4 and just been diagnosed with placenta praevia, posterior position. It's clear of the cervix but v.low - 5mm.

The sonographer was great, I'm booked in again at 32 weeks, but they didn't mention any of the precautionary stuff I've since read online.

Should I abstain from sex/generally take it a bit easier? I wasn't given much info except to watch for bleeding.

Obviously I'm aware it can move, but can I better my chances??

I had praevia with my first. As I understood it from the consultant, about 90% move up, 10% don't and they can't really tell who'll be in the 10%. So chances are good it'll be fine.

If you get any bleeding at all, go straight in. Might be worth packing your bag early in case you're in on bed rest at some point. Again it's unlikely but you've got to pack that bag at some point anyway!

I hope it moves for you. And if it's still low-ish at 32 weeks do insist on another scan to check at 36

Hi, I'm 35+2 and had a scan at 32 weeks due to the same as you. Mine is 4mm too close at the moment. waiting for another scan on Wednesday (36 weeks) to reassess. Apparently the placenta generally doesn't move around your tummy it's just as your bump grows the diameter means the placenta is further away from your cervix.

They would have mentioned if you should avoid sex and I think generally it's only if you have a complete placenta prevea blocking the cervix you are ordered not to with bed rest.

Clearly if you start bleeding get to hospital v quickly, and have a bag packed earlier than you think you should, just in case.

There's plenty of time left for your placenta to move so enjoy the pregnancy and don't worry about it. x

Please dont panic! There is lots of time for movement, as you belly grows it is likely that placenta will move up too.

You only 'need' 20mm between cervix and placenta

toohardtothinkofaname · 15/08/2015 06:47

I got told I had this yesterday. Not covering the cervix & she said likely to move but did advise no sex (which is fine for me, can't be arsed anyway!). She also told me not to Google so try not to Smile

I have a placenta previa too. My consultant said only 3% don't move so I'm not too worried tbh

chopsface · 16/08/2015 08:48

I was told 90% 'move' so I'm not worrying :-) the sonographer was so relaxed about it so it didn't panic me at all to learn of it. I wasn't told not to have sex, but even if we were told, we've not been having it anyway since conception Grin so no big loss!

jugglingmonkey · 16/08/2015 16:31

Ha, nor us Chops, neither DH or I can face it! Pleased to hear others are relaxed about it too. I'm trying not to worry but it's just another thing to think about... It's more the possible bleeds that worry me than it not moving.

Hello ladies. I have the dubious honour of having suffered grade 4 placenta Praevia twice, with DC2 and then DC3.

Grade 4 is when the cervix is completely covered.

With DC2 I was given no advice, with DC3 I was given lots of so's and don'ts.

There are 2 types of PP, stable and unstable. I had the unstable type, which can mean bleeding. With DC2 I was fine until 33.5 weeks, then in hospital until ELCS at 37.5. With DC3 I had admissions at 24 weeks, 26, three times at 31 weeks, final admission at 33 weeks, EMCS at 36+1, baby was absolutely fine.

I'm happy to answer any questions you have.
