i avoided sushi & shellfish for the duration , but i know others who didn't!

lulumama · 23/11/2006 20:02

marymillington · 23/11/2006 20:08

you're probably not technically supposed to but if its fresh as a daisy (and preferably hot - like with pasta or something), i would.
i had lobster the other week on my birthday [vaguely guilty emoticon]

lulumama · 23/11/2006 20:11

actually, they had frozen lobster and crab in Lidl this week...maybe i should go and get some , so i can be decadent too!

Frenchsmallfry · 23/11/2006 20:20

I was led to believe that shellfish was ab fine if fresh and cooked.

I eat it anyway. So as lulumama says I'm sure on the odd occassion no harm will be done.

ENJOY. Yummm!!

I'm in Vancouver where the sushi is delicious and fresh, and I decided that it would do the baby more good than harm, read up that Japanese woman continue to eat raw fish, and that the biggest risk was tape worm, and that good restaurants would give no problem, so I've been eating it in my last month. I thought the tape worm would come in handy for managing post-natal weight loss. You're told not to eat so much, all deli meats - which would included any pre-packed sandwiches, but Pret give specific warnings about which sandwiches pregnant women can't eat, so I think most of it is safer than people think. I know it's important and going without food you like for a few months is no great sacrifice, but I have a vegetarian husband and needed the iron and he is a baby if I cook meat in the house, so it would be more risky for me not to eat fish, and women all over the world seem to have fewer food restrictions than we do and still have healthy babies.

Frenchsmallfry · 23/11/2006 20:47

Agreed Macneil, I am in France, tiny tiny restrictions here. I don't have any problem with food advice in pregnancy any advice to lesson risks can only be good but I do think it has freaked people out in the UK.

If it was really a massive issue and VERY serious then surely all these restrictions would apply all over the world. It seems that the UK has driven people to panic if they eat one peanut or prawn by accident.

Frenchsmallfry · 23/11/2006 20:51

Soooo Sorry tutter, just realised that my last post really had no bearing on your post. I wasn't getting at anyone that was worried about what they may or may not have eaten, honest. Just saddens me to think that it's somethng else to really worry about when pg'cy is worrying enough.

Tutter · 23/11/2006 20:53

oh no offence taken, chip

i played it by he book last time, but imagine i'll be a bit more relaxed this time

Frenchsmallfry · 23/11/2006 21:01

Yes I'm sure you will Tutter. I had ds in the UK and was text book. Became obsessed with checking the labels. When I moved to France and had dd it made me realise that YES there are risks and I appriciate them but there are risks with everything. I couldn't believe the difference but it showed me to be careful but to relax a little, the odd thing was not going to harm us. Am always careful with washing fresh produce and dates on things but I do eat most things I fancy.

thelittlestboho · 23/11/2006 23:15

Beware of BEANS!! Especially on wholemeal toast, I had some yesterday for lunch and suffered from kiler wind all day/night and through the night. Never again, same goes for apples, broccolli, cabbage, why oh why is life mocking me once more?? Food is all I have left.LoL

MKG · 23/11/2006 23:37

To clear things up you can eat sushi. You just need to ask to have it cooked. Peanut butter is a good source of protein. I ate peanut butter while pregnant and ds isn't allergic to peanuts.

I say pregnant women in each country each have their own restrictions. Until anyone can come up with a universally bad food, I'm eating what I like.

dueat44 · 24/11/2006 10:12

PMSL at tape worm weight loss management!

Frenchsmallfry · 24/11/2006 21:20

I'm begining to think a little like you MKG.

CantSleepWontSleep · 24/11/2006 21:23

macneil - deli meats and prepacked sandwiches are totally different! You're supposed to avoid deli meats only because they have been lying around on a counter where people can cough and sneeze over them!

macneil · 24/11/2006 21:56

Oh. I didn't think of that. Eh, it's like 10 minutes from being born, now, there's nothing I can do about any of it.

CantSleepWontSleep · 24/11/2006 22:07

lol! Good luck with the birth then.
