How far would you walk at 39 weeks?

Thinking of what I can do with DS (4) and DS (2) next week. I only have the car one day, and have some errands to run so that should keep us suitably busy. 4 other days to fill though?!

To the loo and back.

Repeat as necessary. Grin

I walked about 3 or 4 miles (with break in middle for coffee and cake!) at 40 + 13. Admittedly I was trying to get things going (it worked, had baby later that day).

zannyminxoxox · 07/08/2015 15:55

I walked around local park didn't want to be too far away from home just incase

whittlefish · 07/08/2015 15:59

I'm 39 weeks tomorrow and am trying to walk 3/4 miles a day but that includes around the house etc. I have a watch that tracks how far I walk so that helps. I would say walk as far as is comfortable but make sure you can take regular breaks to rest and hydrate. And of course all he toilet stops Smile

LovesYoungDream · 07/08/2015 16:01

I could barely walk during my pregnancies due to spd but some ideas that may work:
Local park with nearby toilets
Soft play
Call friends to arrange play dates (hopefully they can come to you)
Could granny/Aunt/friend take them off for a day
A trip to the Library

WorraLiberty · 07/08/2015 16:04

I think the question should probably be how far did we walk at 39 weeks.

Obviously the answers will be all different and not related to you/your pregnancy IYSWIM?

I used to walk miles during my 3 pregnancies and very comfortably so.

Other pregnant women found just walking to the local shops a struggle.

IAmAPaleontologist · 07/08/2015 16:08

With dc3 I was walking just over a mile to take dd to nursery and then on to school with ds1 then walking the mile and a bit home again. Then at lunch time I was walking back to pick dd up from nursery and walking home again. Then in the afternoon I was walking the mile and a bit to school to get ds1 and the mile and a bit home again. So a fair distance all added up!

Sometimes if I was feeling tired then I would sneak a bus for the trip back home from nursery with dd.

As long as you're in his health, as far as you want! First pregnancy, I comfortably walked 8 miles at 40 weeks. This one (twin pregnancy) is much more of a struggle and I can't walk more than a mile without a break at 26 weeks.
Just listen to your body.

I think I'm less bothered about me, and more about being out alone with the DC. I'm feeling perfectly fine but have had 2 quick labours so am a bit apprehensive about how I would cope.

Unfortunately my parents are away next week, back the week after so they can take DC (hurrah!) come visit us, even ferry us about Grin Annoyingly they live half way between here and the park, but I could take a spare key for emergency loo breaks (for all of us!)

I guess without having any where I have to go, I'm just looking for some reassurance about going X distance (if that makes sense)

I'm 37+2 with pregnancy 4.. Getting nervous about going anywhere with out DH now

Rosenwyn1985 · 07/08/2015 17:31

I'm 38+1 and wouldn't go that far. This is my second pregnancy and the first time I went from nothing to fully dilated in two and a half hours. I don't drive so will have to wait for hubby to get to me if it's during the day so.... Long shot is I'm keen to stay near home so if things start I can get there easily and grab bags etc as he gets to me. Local park, shops and library is my limit.... The park is getting dull!

newtonupontheheath · 07/08/2015 17:35

Park is over a mile away, there is a bus but it's every half an hour.

Library and shops are all probably half a mile there and back... McDonald's is probably the same Wink

I had spd and anaemia and didn't walk further than the local shops after about 37 weeks. I had my daughter at 38+6.

Sansarya · 07/08/2015 17:36

Last 2 weeks of my pregnancy I walked a mile to a yoga studio for pregnancy yoga everyday. I took the bus back though!

LadyPlumpington · 07/08/2015 17:41

I'm pretty sure that a 4 mile walk made me go into labour at 39+3. Just saying...

FlightofFancy · 07/08/2015 17:46

I'm thinking about this as I'm home on my own with DS from 37 weeks. We have a car and I'm feeling pretty fit so hoping not to be too stuck (and DS is 5 so can be helpful). I'm not planning to go further than about half an hour's drive though as had DS at 37 weeks with a movie-style big gush of waters going followed by quick labour! DH works about an hour away but have local friends on standby! I'd say it depends how quickly you could get home if necessary.

YeOldeTrout · 07/08/2015 17:48

miles & miles & miles -- for me.

Since you have history of quick labours (how quick? 45 minutes?) I guess I'd keep within a 5 minute walk of houses & buildings & people. Could still walk miles & miles & miles, just never too far from buildings & help.

motherinferior · 07/08/2015 17:48

I waddled with DD1 to the childminder and back twice a day at 37 weeks - must have been a couple of miles in total? - vv slowly. Never got to 39 weeks, though. DD2 arrived at 37+5, to my huge waddly relief.

newtonupontheheath · 07/08/2015 20:42

Trout... 4 hours from nothing to baby with DS and 2 with DD. I'm hoping I get a bit more notice than 1 hour this time!Grin

If I was on my own, I'd happily do laps of the high street to bring baby along but I don't want to risk it with the children!

Interesting to see a mix of experiences though... I'll feel less guilty for staying home, and I have people to blame if I give birth in the middle of Lidl Grin

Loo and back, loo and back, loo and back. That's my whole day and I'm nearly 38 weeks now.....

blowinahoolie · 08/08/2015 16:01

I don't feel able to drive the car now, it is just too uncomfortable for me. DC play in the back garden or out with their friends in the street until DH is days off to help with it all. No point venturing far if you don't have to!

Fishwives · 08/08/2015 16:07

I walked twelve miles on my due date (to and from an acupuncture appointment to which I would normally have gone by tube) to try to dislodge DS. He went to 40+ 15, and I spent a lot of the 15 walking long distances. It didn't work...

blowinahoolie · 08/08/2015 17:02

Honestly no idea how some of you have the energy to walk miles at such a late stage in pregnancy, do you not suffer from lack of sleep??

I have PGP, and hardly sleeping, constantly need to pee, wouldn't manage to walk miles because of all of this combination of factors.

Lucky you if you can manage it though. I can walk to the kettle and back, or toilet and back and that's about the size of it until the baby's here then I'll be walking ASAP longer distances.

tbtc · 08/08/2015 17:07

For me the limiting factor would have been the children. They were much more amenable to walking when they were in utero!

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 08/08/2015 17:08

I walked for 6 miles - 3 miles there & 3 miles back, with dinner in the middle - three days before being induced with DD. I'd had a sweep earlier in the day & was hoping to get things moving!

It was a nice summer evening stroll along a canal path though - I wasn't climbing Snowdon Smile.

On the other hand, I have friends who could barely walk from the house to the car by the end of pregnancy.

I would say that you are fine to walk as far as you personally can without feeling discomfort.
