Fake tan

Does anyone know if it's safe to use fake tan during pregnancy? I usually use it in the summer to get a healthy glow, rather than frying in the sun, but I'm 9 weeks pregnant and just wonder if it would be wise to use it whilst pregnant. Anyone know if it's OK, and if so can you recommend any brands?

Interesting (and scary) report in yesterday's Guardian about chemicals in every day use.
It also had a 'going natural' section you might find useful for safe cosmetics:
www.guardian.co.uk/chemicalworld/
Otherwise, have you tried Neal's Yard?

blimey, I've been whacking on the St Tropez. Better stop for now. I'll have to go for pale and interesting.

didn't mean to scare anyone, guess there's just more awareness now. if it's any consolation, i regularly used fake tan when I was pregnant with ds 3 yrs ago...

Is it safe to sunbathe in the sun then (obviously providing you don't stay too long and use the apropriate creams etc...)?

Lisa78 · 09/05/2004 19:05

I slapped it on my legs when I was pg, at least I did whilst I could still reach my legs but nowhere else
I'm not aware that it can harm a developing baby

Lisa78 · 09/05/2004 19:06

yes, as long as you are aware that your skin may well be much more sensitised to the sun and that you may well burn a great deal faster
That said, its not recommended that you sit with your bump out in hot sun for ages
And I believe the baby can tell you are in sunlight, when its eyes have developed sufficiently - it can see that its lighter!

ZolaPola · 09/05/2004 19:07

oh god...sorry, I forgot how scary it is when you're pregnant - the guardian link does have an article on sun creams, warning about need to limit usage and go in shade/cover up instead, guess you could do that instead? (again I sunbathed when pregnant...!) all in all, still got to live your life and enjoy it, haven't you -just weigh up the risk and decide from there

Celou · 09/05/2004 19:23

I just prefer myself with a tan, however, I suppose it's a good habit to take not to sunbathe for too long, perhaps I can keep it up even after the baby's born.

God I use fake tan twice a week every week and am now 24 weeks pregnant - all my friends swore by it to make you feel better and i haven't seen anything to say otherwise in pregnnacy mags etc in fact it was suggested in such pregnancy mags in order to make mums to be feel better about themselves - is it really something to avoid???

My local beauty salon did a St Tropez on me last month and assured me it was safe for pregnant women....

Just to say that my mom just brought a tanning mit from M&S (like a little glove that you use to put the fake tan on) and apparently it's brilliant. Only 4 quid i think and the cashier said they've been flying off the shelves.

noddy5 · 10/05/2004 12:17

i've got one of those mitts it is absolutely brilliant!I fake tanned throughout when I was pregnant and ds is ok!

Lolabelle · 11/05/2004 13:51

I feel SO much better with some colour on me and it makes my bump look lovely and smooth and so much more attractive and i feel glowing with a tan and I am tanning right up until the birth if it kills me!! All my friends fake tanned and they all have beautiful healthy children so I think I'll be making sure i'm well and truly stocked up!!

Biggest and best piece of advice I have ever been given towards this pregnancy is not to be too precious about everything - if something is proven to be dangerous then obviously avoid it but speculation can apply to too many things to panic about and the odd few highlights and fake tans with a few glasses of vino and a bowl of peanuts alone aren't something to give me sleepless nights abouut!!
