spd advice

Hiya, have been for routine midwife app today (I am 37 wks). I mentioned that I have been uncomfortable in the last few days. I have been feeling very sore, tender inbetween my legs/inner thighs and buttocks and have had a dragging feeling down one side.
There is no pain when I am sat upright but is worse when I go to bed or walk. I can hardly lift my legs when I am lying flat and it is very difficult to turn over. I thought it could be the babys head dropping down and becoming engaged, she checked and confirmed that this is the case, although not fully engaged as yet.

She suggested that I contact physio dept for poss spd (I have had previous treatment for a bad back). Thing is I was wondering what physio can actually do? Is it worth me contacting them or is it just something I will have to put up with til the baby comes?! Has anybody else suffered with SPD? And what treatment did you have, if any?

Please could someone give me some advice. Thank you x

there have been several threads on SPD...have a look through the pregnancy and childbirth boards..there are lots of good links on there

as you are so close to delivery, not a lot to be done, except soem pysio and maybe some sort of support belt around your hips, under the bump to hold the pelvis together....the pressure from baby's head will also make you a little uncomfortable too....xx

in virtually all cases, it disappears with the birth! HTH!

I had SPD from very very early on in the pg, their is pretty much nothing a physio can do, I went along and got a big elastic support belt that caused me more pain than the SPD.

I just gritted my teeth till I had DS (for months and months in my case) and the second he had popped out I felt fine no pain at all.

BettySpaghetti · 23/11/2006 19:26

It would be worth seeing physio (especially as you might go 2 wks past your due date which means you have some time to go yet!) - try and get some crutches. I found these helped for generally getting around. Personally I didn't get on with the support belt though but I know others have found it helped them.

Also, as lulumama suggested, do a search on here for SPD -you'll find lots of tips and general info from those of us who have been through it.

HTH

I found a lot of useful info on this site - search by SPD and by Symphysis Pubis.

Being very careful of your posture and movement were the only things I found helpful.

Thank you very much everybody. I already have a belt so may have to resort to wearing that again, but I really hate it!

Thanks again xx

I had SPD from about 24 weeks. I went from walking/running 10 miles a day at the start of my pregnancy to finding it a real (painful) effort to walk to the bathroom. The physio gave me a belt and crutches, but they really didn't help at all - walking a dog while using crutches doesn't work. My DS was born 6 months ago and I am still bothered by it - pain on standing, turning in my bed and I couldn't run if my life depended on it.

I wore a giant tubigrip(sp?) which was more comfy than a belt and kept me nice and warm in the winter too!! Try to sleep with a pillow between your legs too.

danf · 25/11/2006 13:42

Does anyone find that it hurts wen the baby moves, i find it really hurts like the baby is pushung down all the time.

CornflakeKid · 01/12/2006 22:27

I am 20 weeks and have spd - its pg no.3 - going to physio next week. It hurts all the time and the painkillers the doctor gave me knock me out - have taken this week off work but not sure whether have strength to work a full day without taking the knockout painkillers! I have a tubigrip but it is not very comfy at all.

I am thinking about accupuncture, osteopathy and the bowen technique as ways to alleviate the pain.

My pain by the way is not really down low in the middle but in my hips, back and down my legs - have been to hosp twice as on weds the pain was so bad I could not move and had to crawl to the phone to call doctor - thought was in early labour/placenta abrupted or something the pain was so bad.

I want to avoid the crutches/wheel chair thing as already have 2 boys who need me!

and...just to make things worse - they think this baby is going to be bigger than my last who was 10lbs!

CornflakeKid · 01/12/2006 22:28

and yes it does hurt when the baby kicks me near my hip/goes to sleep on it!

custardthedragon · 02/12/2006 11:44

i thought i had spd at 15 wks - so i saw an osteopath (british school of osteo in london) who was great and actually checked my pubis bone and found that it was in perfectly good shape.

but - i did have some trouble on the left side of my hip which he thinks was causing the whole pelvis to tilt funny - thus causing the pain. he's working on fixing it now, and even after the 1st session i feel a bit better. so it's always good to check that it actually is what you think it is before giving up.

millysimmons · 04/12/2006 15:45

I had really bad SPD during my pregancy frorm wk 16ish & ended up in a wheelchair. I was treated about 10 days post birth by a McTimoney Chiroptactor & am now pain free. However I didnt realise she could have treated my throughout my pregnancy. Try the levic partnership who can supply a list of Chiros who have a good knowledge & experience of treating pregnant women with SPD.
