Nuchal scan - what was your Downs risk for ladies in their 30s?

Hi

I'm 34 and mine has come back as 1 in 640. I'm not happy with it. I thought it would be lower then that but apparently all my results were at the top end of normal so it made my risk higher. Baby had nasal bone and nuchal was 2.0mm. I've had Panorma test but it has already failed once and is therefore more likely to fail again and no point in having Harmony as will also fail if Panorma has failed!

If you are in your 30s could you please share what risk of Down's syndrome was after your nuchal scan? I need to know if I'm overreacting or I am higher risk then most women my age. My older friend has just told me her result was 1 in 10,000 which has made me feel worse.

chops Isn't it anything over 1:250?

Aged 31, nasal bone visible, the nuchal fold was 0.9mm, bmi of 19 (does that even matter in the calculations? Isn't just to gauge how accurate the bloods would be?), and my risk was calculated at 1:10,000.

It's never 100% certain for anyone though. If you are worried, and have the money to do so, then go for the Harmony test.

babyiwantabump · 29/07/2015 17:45

I'm 30 and risk was 1:29000

Skiptonlass · 29/07/2015 18:04

I'm 36. Results back as 1:20,000. Before the test my risk on age alone was 1:232 or something? So your risk has not gone up after the test, but it's not gone down to the level you might have wanted. Panorama came back as low risk (they report as 1:10,000.)

The test may not fail again - if it's the fraction of foetal DNA in your blood, this gets higher as you get further on. mine had a very low fraction at 11 weeks, but if I'd waited another few weeks I think it'd have been higher. They should re run for free if it failed. Panorama has a different algorithm than harmony which works a little better at low foetal fraction.

Personally, I'd go for the re run. Remember that 1:600 ish is less than a fraction of a percent there is an issue.

Goodness they calibrate the bloods with BMI, but your BMI per se is not a risk factor.

RooibosTeaAgain · 29/07/2015 18:09

My harmony did not work first time but on second time it did - they did it for free but had to pay a lot for travel again.

Christelle2207 · 29/07/2015 18:10

At 35, 1 in 9000
At 37, 1 in 6000
However not sure how helpful these stats are really. One couple I know were 1 in several thousand yet turned out to be the 1- their son has Down's. That said they have coped very well and went on to have two further healthy kids.

Firsttimer101 · 29/07/2015 18:11

I'm 35, measurement was 2 and risk came back 1:15000

GoooRooo · 29/07/2015 18:17

At 37, 1 in 1500
At 40, 1 in 1460

OP one in 640 is a 0.15% chance. if you look at it that way it doesn't seem very high, not even near a half of a percent of a chance.

yummymango · 29/07/2015 18:22

I am 39 and mine was 1:68.
I don't think you are over reacting. I wouldn't have been happy unless it was 1:1000 or more. I had the NIPT and it came back low risk.

Brummiegirl15 · 29/07/2015 19:17

I'm 38 and my risk hasn't come back yet, however my nuchal measurement was 1.3 and i was told anything over 1.150 is low risk. So I'd be happy with your result

New30 · 29/07/2015 20:50

30 and got 1:32900

Rufus200 · 29/07/2015 20:58

Thank you for all the replies. I've realised that 2.0mm is normal and that it must be my blood results pushing my risk up. I should get my Panorama (similar to Harmony but tests for more conditions) results by Monday if it hasn't failed again.

Hi,
Hope this comes across in right way and not patronising/pessimistic-sometimes hard to write these things down!
I think what number/risk you receive is only helpful if you would carry on with pregnancy regardless of risk but if you would want to terminate if the baby had a chromosomal abnormality then a more accurate test should be sought e.g. cvs, amnio etc.
I do think that some pregnant women see 'low risk' as 'no risk'. My friend was one of these women and her child was born with DS. Where she lives you don't get the risk factor in numerical value (although after her DD was born she found out her risk was around 1:675 or around there) you just get told 'low risk' or invited for further screening if you are 'high'. She would have terminated if she knew antenatally.
Sorry if I have scared you but I just wanted to give you a different perspective.

herethereandeverywhere · 29/07/2015 21:44

My friend was 36. Her result was 1:2 (not a typo). I don't know her exact fold measurement but the sonographer described it as being 'very bad; off the scale'.

She had CVS which came back clear. Her son is now approaching his 4th birthday and totally healthy, totally normal.

whooshbangprettycolours · 29/07/2015 21:46

38 1:22

I had a CVS

FizzyFeet · 29/07/2015 22:01

Just been through this too, OP. For us it was important to know all the information so that we could make an informed choice, and so that if continuing the pregnancy, we would be able to prepare before the birth.

My Nuchal fold was 1.4mm at 12+2 weeks (there is an expectation that it can increase a bit if you are further on than that, and I was told anything under 2.5mm is normal).

My blood results increased my risk to 1 in 110. In our area anything over 1 in 150 is deemed low risk and no further testing is recommended. I have to say that if I had had a result like yours I would have been inclined to leave it there - the risk is really very low - BUT it's different for everyone.

We went for the harmony test and all came back lower than 1 in 10,000. Hope the panorama test can give you similar peace of mind.

This is a frozen embryo ivf pregnancy so they dated the results based on me being 33y 7 months at term (in reality I'll be 35y 2m).

Pugmumlondon · 29/07/2015 22:12

31, fold of 1.9mm and score of 1:6,800 had the test at 13 weeks. It's not as high as some but not as low either. There are so many variables. If we'd gotten a high risk result we would have considered harmony xx

LostMySocks · 29/07/2015 23:07

I had DS at 38. Risk came back as 1 in 250. Had harmony which gave me 1:10000. DS is perfect. Now pregnant at 40. Risk came back as 1:3600 plus v small fold measurement and nose bone formed

Sansarya · 29/07/2015 23:18

At 36 my risk was 1 in 190, which was solely due to unusually high bHCG levels. Everything else was normal - nuchal fold 1.3 with visible nasal bone. It was a little worrying but I had a very detailed 20 week scan which put my mind at ease, and DS was fine.

FoodPorn · 30/07/2015 06:48

1:52000 at 34. A bit higher last time at 33.

ribbitTheFrog · 30/07/2015 06:54

Age 35 1:11000. Good luck!

Alanna1 · 30/07/2015 06:54

When i had my babies in my mid and late 30s, the only option other than the probability tests was an amino. I had risks of around 1/20000 and 1/16000. I would have bought a harmony test if it was available. I didn't have an amino for obvious reasons with those risks but I do not like risk.

LizzyBee123 · 30/07/2015 10:05

HI, I'm 36 and I got my result on Tuesday, 1:37 (!!!!) I booked straight in for a Harmony test and had it done yesterday. If the harmony test doesn't work then they send it off again and again until you get a result at no extra cost. I would say you should look into this as it will put your mind at rest. These things are all relative. Your nuchal measurement looks good to me, mine was 3mm. With the harmony test you also get a really in depth scan. Mine was so reassuring - she found a nasal bone, a healthy placenta with 3 veins, saw all 4 chambers of the heart functioning properly and many other features which all reassured me - she even pointed out the lenses in the baby's eyes! At a risk of 1:37 I'm extremely high risk compared with my last pregnancy. The Harmony scan put my mind at rest and now I have an 8 day with to get definitive results. I should also mention that the private sonographer got a considerably lower nuchal mmt than the NHS, so it's really worth getting a second opinion. She also reassured me about my blood results which all came back on the low. You should also remember that a few years ago before nuchal screening was common practice that ALL women over 35 were offered an amino due to the age related risk factors - the nuchal screening is there to decide who should have an amnio in order to cut down on un-neccasery miscarriages that can happen from amnio or CVS. The result from your 12 wk scan and nuchal screen is a medical guideline based on statistics in order to give you a guide as to whether or not to have an amnio - it is NOT a diagnosis - there is a 639:640 chance that your baby is 100% perfect - I would be happy with that given the news I had :-) BUT, it's all relative and to dispel your worries I would highly recommend the Harmony test, the scan alone was worth the price! Sending you a big hug and lots of luck for your pregnancy - there are many uncertainties in life and I think we never stop worrying about our little ones from the moment we fall pregnant 'til the end of our days!!!

STOP GOOGLE-ING, STOP WORRYING, BOOK A HARMONY….
