hello everyone

despite undertaking osteopathy and wearing expensive and extremely unattractive foundation garments, my spd has got a lot worse in the last couple of days. went to gp this am to get a referral to an obstetric physio and while gp was happy to provide referral, she doesn't know any obstetric physios.

grateful for any recommendations in central, sw or inner se london area.

thanks in advance

Obviously she's not here anymore but Pie had one didn't she? I have a feeling Pupuce recommended him... another mumsnetter certainly recommended him. It should be on Pie's thread if you can find it.

(forgot to add my sympathies!)

serenequeen · 07/05/2004 13:38

thanks for the reminder i've had a look and there is a recommendation for an expert osteopath in clapham which would be extremely handy for me...

nothing specific on obstetric physio though.

anyone? it really hurts!

This is such woolly advice it's probably no use, but we have obstetric physios who are based at the local maternity hospital. I know it's not the same as a direct recommendation, but couldn't your GP contact one through wherever you're booked in to give birth?

I'm really sorry though, sounds agony.

I am sure Pie's one is at her hospital. If you want I'll give you her email so you can ask. She's still having treatment
Sorry it's so bad. I never realised it was so common.

I went to a physio at Queen Charlotte's (Hammersmith) for this as had bad spd with my second child. Not sure if they were specifically obstetric physios but I guess they must have been because they gave me all sort of supports and exercises. The tips on how to handle it were good (i.e. ways of moving to avoid the pain). However, nothing made it better and it only eased 6 months after the birth (and I still get mild twinges now, 2 and a half years later).

I THINK my midwife referred me though I am sure your gp could as well (through Hammersmith Hospital then Queen Charlottes).

Have a look at this
You just need the first part of your postcode and change the speciality to Obstetrics.

Hope you find someone

carwillin · 07/05/2004 15:48

Sorry, should have said to click on Find a Physio first.

prufrock · 07/05/2004 16:00

They have a really good one at the Royal London hospital. Probably no good geographically for you, but if you call them (main switchboard is 0207 737 7000) they could maybe give you details of a closer one.

SQ - try contacting the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, 14 Bedford Row, London, WC1R 4E, telephone : 0207 306 6666, www.csp.org.uk or the
Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Women?s Health, www.acpwh.org.uk. Let me know if I can help more. xxxx

I have a brilliant osteopath in Putney - I asked him about spd when Pie had it really badly and he said he does treat it I think

He is called Clive Lathey, tel 020 8789 3881
Make sure you get him and not one of the others (they are good but not as good as Clive)

If you leave him a msg on the answerphone he will call you back to discuss.

Bugsy2 · 07/05/2004 16:31

Know a fantastic one who treated me in Wimbledon - is that area in any good for you?

CountessDracula · 07/05/2004 16:31

oh and bk you know my name don't you if he asks who referred you. Sorry to hear about this. Are you still able to work?

CountessDracula · 07/05/2004 16:34

also try this place -they have phone no to call for info and could point you in the right direction

motherinferior · 07/05/2004 16:39

Also I have the number for the European School of Osteopathy, 01622 671 558 - Pupuce gave it to me. Pricy but the bloke who runs it is a well-known specialist in the condition - Renzo Molinari. I haven't met him directly but interviewed him (and boy does he have a lovely voice

tigermoth · 07/05/2004 19:20

hope by now you have got in touch with someone serenequeen. Just sending you my sympathies.

twogorgeousboys · 07/05/2004 19:31

Sorry to hear you are suffering with this condition. I was in AGONY with it during my second pregnancy, undiagnosed (dismissed by midwife) for a long time. When I did finally get a referral, I was treated at Hammersmith/Queen Charlottes but this was where I was going to have my baby any way.

I know you've already been directed to the SPD Support Group website.

Good luck - take care of yourself.

Another contact for you:

Jane Howard
0208 500 4267

She is an obstetric physiotherapist who does work at The Active Birth Centre in North London. I don't know her personally, but had some info about her from a visit to the Birth Centre. I think she does classes there.

Flip · 07/05/2004 19:47

I'm so sorry serenequeen. Ds2 is nearly six months old now and I'm still suffering. I've just been reffered to a lower back specialist. I hope you recover quicker than me.

serenequeen · 07/05/2004 20:25

thanks so much for all these messages and suggestions. it was touch and go whether i went to work today tbh. afraid i had to spend 10 mins crying in office loo having been given runaround by St Thomas's switchboard trying to find someone - why couldn't my sodding gp find someone, ffs?

thanks again everyone, i'll follow up as soon as possible
