Septate/bicorniate uterus anybody?

jmac88 · 01/07/2015 12:04

Hi. I'm 12 weeks pregnant with 1st baby. Had 12 week scan which showed I have a septum in my uterus that is almost complete. Baby was tucked jnti one section and the other section was empty. Sonographer said he couldn't really say much but have been booked in for 2 extra scans at 16 weeks (to measure cervix) and 28 weeks (to check baby's growth) with consultant.

Just wondering if anybody has or has ever had similar experience?

Sounds like the main risks are breech birth, late miscarriage or preterm labour.

Thanks! Xxx

My bicornate uterus was only found at ds's birth. He had a transverse lie apparently caused by the shape of my uterus. I was told to get sme scans when not pregnant and to have my kidneys checked as apparently it's not uncommon to only have one. Weirdly when I had dd (also a section, only 16 mths later) they told me that there was nothing unusual about my uterus.

So I never followed it up really. I was told by the nurse at one of my smears that my cervix was a funny shape - she drew a little picture that looked a bit like a wishbone. So I suspect that I have some division, but perhaps not very much.

Duckstar · 03/08/2015 07:16

Nooka is right on the kidneys. I have 4! They look e shaped. I have to drink lots as otherwise prone to Uti s. They kept an eye on that in pregnancy. I nearly had to go on prophylactic antibiotics in first pregnancy as had 3 Utis; however, it did all settle down. Just keep the fluids up!

Imperialleather2 · 03/08/2015 07:37

I've got a,really divided but not quite septate uterus.

I've got 2 dc. Ds was born at 34 weeks naturally and dd was born at 35 weeks but was breach so I had a section. Dd was pretty squished towards the end and her head was wedged under my ribs which meant her head was almost triangle shaped when she was born. She also had a dislocated wrist and shoulder from.being stuck on one side. Not trying to scare anyone but just to warn you they can get a bit squished! She is absolutely perfect now and now lasting effects whatsoever.

Just checking in...

gillian how did it go???!!!

I've been having braxton hicks contractions which freaked me out a bit as thought it might be pre term labour.

Definitely can feel my uterus sort of sticks out on one side of my tummy more than the other?

How is everyone else?

rose have you had 20 weeks scan yet?

Got mine on 9th sept.

19 weeks + 1

Also forgot to say I have a kidney scan tomorrow morning as apparently uterine abnormalities can mean you have one kidney????

Hi jmac, glad you're doing ok. Braxton hicks do sound a bit scary though.

All is good here, I've found out I'm having a boy! The scan seemed fine, but I'm still being seen every 2 weeks to measure my cervix etc. I haven't had my kidneys scanned, hope you turn out to have the right number!

jmac88 · 19/08/2015 07:38

Ah rose didn't they say you would go back to midwife led care if your cervix was ok at 20 weeks?

OP posts:
jmac88 · 19/08/2015 12:15

And also congrats on your baby boy!

Kidney scan was all fine, no extras for me!

OP posts:
roseformyrose · 21/08/2015 23:17

Good news on the kidneys!

I'm still consultant led till 25 weeks, but after that I think they will discharge me if everything is fine. My placenta is still low but I haven't even been booked an extra scan for that!

jmac88 · 10/09/2015 15:00

How's everyone doing with their septate/bicorniate uterus'?

I had my anomoly scan yesterday. Everything looks good. Baby is breech bum down

Oops pressed post too soon!

Baby's head is in the left side of uterus and feet are kicking through to the right side. Consultant said he could change position in third trimester but he looked pretty snug as he was to me.

Cervix is long so don't need to be seen by consultant any more but will have a growth scan at 36 weeks.

roseformyrose · 10/09/2015 15:47

You're having a boy too, congrats!

Have they spoken to you about delivery options yet? I guess if he's unlikely to turn they'll work on the basis of a c section. Mine is the opposite way round to yours (head has been on the right at the bottom for ages, with feet kicking me in the left side of the ribs) but they're still assuming he might be coming out the traditional way. I have a growth scan at 28 weeks so will see if he's moved round by then.

I've now also been discharged from consultant-led care, which is encouraging. Hopefully we can get these babies out with the minimum of fuss.

jmac88 · 10/09/2015 16:46

That's great news rose!

I think they will wait to speak about delivery options after the 36 week scan, although that feels quite late to me...

Strange that you're growth scan is at 28 weeks...I originally had one booked for then but they've changed it to 36.

OP posts:
roseformyrose · 10/09/2015 17:06

I have one at 36 weeks as well! I think the consultant wanted to err on the side of caution with me as I've also had Asherman's syndrome, which has an increased risk of late loss and retained placenta (and a whole bunch of other horrible stuff).

I know what you mean about 36 weeks seeming late on, I'm struggling to get my head around having no idea what's going to happen till the last minute, but I guess that's the way it does with all births really...

jmac88 · 05/11/2015 11:16

How's everyone doing with their septate/bicorniate uterus'? I'm 30 weeks now and midwife said baby is still in breech/transverse position, and still tucked into one side of my uterus. Although I'm sure he's been trying to turn around the last few days as my bump is going all lumpy and feels like it's going to explode!

Feel a bit worried that he might run out of room before due date.

Have prepared myself for c section really as was told by a Dr friend that with septate uterus it's unlikely baby will turn after 30 weeks.

Wondering when c section would likely be booked for though....

Hope everyone is well!

Hi all this is my first pregnancy at 39 years old. I've just had my first scan at 13 weeks and it was mentioned and written on my notes septate/bicornuate uterus, nothing was said to me about it except it means heart-shaped.

It wasn't until I got home and researched it I found out all this information and now I'm quite worried. I don't see the midwife again for couple of weeks, do I need to wait to see her or try and speak to doctor? Am still waiting for blood test results too so maybe they're waiting to talk through everything in one go?

So nervous things might go wrong.....

roseformyrose · 05/11/2015 13:37

Hi jmac, so pleased to hear that things are still going OK. I've been getting the crazy lumpy feelings for a while too, so I think mine has been trying to turn as well. I'm now almost 32 weeks and I feel like he might have finally turned (has been breech/transverse for the last few weeks) but will find out at my scan this afternoon.

I've been told that if he doesn't turn they'll c section me at 38.5 weeks, but that's right before Christmas so not ideal! Will be hoping for a somersaulting baby.

roseformyrose · 05/11/2015 13:40

Hi Melinda, congratulations on your pregnancy! If you do have a septum you're already past the first huge risk so I'd try not to worry about it too much. If your little one had implanted on the septum it would have likely resulted in a mc before 12 weeks (at least that's what I've been told) so hopefully you should be OK from here.

I would ask to speak to a consultant though, as they might want to monitor the baby's growth later on. One of the risks is that the baby could start to run out of space sooner than they would in a normal shaped uterus. I was referred straight to the preterm birth clinic after my first booking appointment with the midwife, but I expect all hospitals are different.

jmac88 · 05/11/2015 18:31

Hey melinda congrats on your pregnancy too! Don't panic! As you can see rose and I have got to this stage of our pregnancies with little problems, nothing caused by our uterus'! I agree with rose if something was going to happen it would have most likely happened in the first trimester. The main issue it seems with uterine abnormalities is that baby has less room to get into head down position or they can come a little early. Neither of these would be disasters. I would definitely ask to speak to a consultant about it as from my experience neither GPS or midwives seem to have a clue about it and will just fob it off. I'm disappointed they didn't speak to you about it but wrote it on your noted.....that's not keeping you very informed. Definitely ask about it if you're worried though. Keep us updated with how you get on!

Hey rose let me know how you get on with your scan! Would be great news if he has turned. Have you been getting lots of rib pain too? I think it's because his head is stuck up there! 38.5 was seems a bit early to me. Can't they wait until at least 39??? I'm not too bothered about c section now, have pretty much prepared myself for it and from what I hear it can sometimes be a quicker recovery than a vaginal birth! I think I would rather it planned than to try a vaginal birth and ending up with an emergency one!!!

Great to hear all the pregnancies are progressing well here. Melinda try not to worry too much - I got to 39+1 with my DS before a CS because he was breech/transverse.

28+3 here and this little one is in the exact same position as his big bro - head up, body in the right side of my uterus, bum at bottom and legs kicking up into the left horn with loads of room. My consultant has already been talking CS again as he'd be very surprised if he turns. I'm not concerned to be honest I had a great recovery last time so the only downside is having to stay in hospital longer.

Mawsymoo · 05/11/2015 18:53

Meant to say too - in my experience the lumpy feeling is Braxton hicks contractions. And I'm sure the likelihood of baby turning depends on how deep the septum is - mine goes around 70% down my uterus so there's not a lot of room on one side

roseformyrose · 05/11/2015 18:53

I had my scan and he has indeed turned! I thought as much as I've been having the horrible rib pain but it stopped a few days ago after a massive wriggling episode. Grim isn't it?

I guess yours may well still turn too if mine did at 32 weeks ish, but I agree that a planned c section doesn't seem like a bad option, especially compared to an emergency one. I guess they'll want to discuss that at 36 weeks, which seems late in the day but at least gives the little one a bit more time to get in position.

mummatobe1 · 06/11/2015 10:40

Hey special ladies!!
I have a heart shaped uterus. I'm 35 weeks and 4 days and baby is sitting on my right hand side during whole pregnancy. It's now head down with its back facing right side bum is in my ribs and legs and feet curled up.
At my week 20 scan the ultrasound technician told me looks like bub has pushed my uterus to normal shape so haven't been monitored since then just regular appointments
im sure yous can all agree on how uncomfortable it is in this kind of pregnancy but we can do it!! Will be interesting to see how my labour goes because doctors and midwives arnt thinking anything of it and I'm not either as long as baby is healthy and going well I'm happy! Can't predict any pregnancy we have to wait and see!

jmac88 · 06/11/2015 15:40

Hey mumma pleased to hear your baby seems to be in a more sensible position. I feel your pain though! I'm sure his head has been really tucked into my ribs today and it's so painful!

rose great news that he's turned. Let's hope he stays put!

I think it is frustrating not knowing how birth will go but yes it is the same for everyone. Would be nice to be able to prepare for one or the other.

mawsy you may be right about braxton hicks, although if that is what they are they have been pretty constant all day today, feeling them about every 10 mins. Should I be worried? Think my septum is also about 70%
