Was my midwife trying to be encouraging or not?

My little'un is due a week before Christmas. I mentioned to the midwife today how I'm hoping she'll be on time or even early cos it would be nice to have her for Christmas, and the bloody woman just laughed and said 'I doubt it! Most first babies are late so we'll probably see you after Christmas' or words to that effect. WTF??? Is she trying to be honest and prepare me or was that a bit insensitive?

I love all these replies, they're brilliant! Especially thanks to BooBoo though, it did get on my tits! She was so convinced that little'un would be late and never even suggested that she might be early, yet everybody tells you to be prepared two weeks either side. I don't know...
I'll try and find this Due in Dec thread!

My MW told me from 35 weeks that DS was fully engaged and that he would definintely be here sooner rather than later - 6 weeks later he arrived!! This thoroughly p**d me and DH off as she would have been better saying nothing as it just got our hopes up - sometimes MW's just don't think about what they are saying to pg women!

Fingers crossed your lo does arrive before Xmas
