Lucozade test

Has anyone here had it? Hoping for some experience / advice.

I'm having it on Thursday due to DS' weight (10lb 4oz).

Midwife said it would make me feel really unwell; if you've had the test did you find this? I'm fucking crap with needles at the best of times so to know that I'm going to be feeling rubbish is making me pretty anxious.

What were the results of your test (if you don't mind sharing of course) and what did that mean for your pregnancy?

Thanks in advance for any nuggets of wisdom. Flowers

If you can take your own chilled Lucozade then I'd recommend it :) drinking an entire bottle of warm, sticky Lucozade on a hot day and on an empty stomach isn't pleasant. Especially if, like me, you promptly vom it back up and have to drink another bottle :( I had no further ill effects and went into work after, results were normal.

Mine was with a kind of thick lemonade (sprite not real lemons) type substance here in NZ and yes, after fasting that amount of sugar was a little icky, but not horrific. The worst bit is the waiting - I managed to knit quite a lot of a jumper that day!

Luckily all was okay, nowhere near the threshold, and it's just that like other posters I grow enormous babies...

I sometimes get the feeling that midwives tell you the worst case scenario so that you are pleasantly surprised when it's better. A kind of under promise and over deliver kind of situation.

All the best for your test OP Flowers

Thanks guys, I really do appreciate all the responses.

It's worth mentioning I'm only 8+2 so early days for this test to be done. At the moment I'm dreading them making me change my diet as my diet is basically anything I can keep down, including shit loads of carbs.

I get to take my own lucozade (yay!).

I had it as everyone does in my area. It didn't make me feel unwell although I hate lucozade! I have very poor veins so had loads of nurses trying to do the blood test as quick as possible so the time didn't run out! But of a drama but didn't feel in and results were fine

I had the 1 hour gestational diabetes test (am like geekymommy based in the US) last week. The drink mings! Although it's not lucozade, it bore a fine resemblance to a 1980's style panda pop, and orange fizzy burps ensued for about 3 hours afterwards. To get a decent shot at the test, I recommend:

  • make sure you fast properly for 12 hours before they take your blood, so the only think you should have is water
  • chill the drink (even if its lucozade) as it makes it much more palatable (still pretty icky tho) and I followed up with water to get it down
  • take something to eat in your bag afterwards. I had crackers, and then went and mainlined some wholewheat toast to avoid the inevitable woozy feeling.

As lj said, you may see a massive surge in baby movements, the later on you are. Mine was absolutely bouncing around - the Dr was all "oh he's very active!" at the scan I had, well hardly surprising!

Got my results back last week; according to our lab, anywhere from 66-139 are normal, mine came back at 116

geekymommy · 24/06/2015 17:55

My results for the 1 hour were in the 130s (from what I've seen here, we measure blood sugar differently in the US and UK). Some labs consider 130 the cutoff for the 1 hour, some use 140. Ours uses 130, so back I went. The rationale for 130 is fewer false negatives, but it results in more false positives, like mine.

Bringing your own glucose drink isn't an option here, at least not at the hospital I went to. Mine was lemon-lime flavour both times, which was at least less gross than orange (in my opinion).

I was freaked out, too, because I have depression that gets much worse if I'm on a low-carb diet. I'm needle-phobic, so I don't see myself being able to inject insulin, either. Fortunately, my result was negative.

You're better off with the lucozade. I don't like it but the stuff they gave in the hospital in a previous pregnancy was vile, puke-inducing.
The lucozade can make you feel a bit sick but if you sit for a while you should be fine.

Thanks guys. The fasting has begun - wish me luck for the morning Grin
