Second hand pram do or don't?

Ok pram dilemma !!! Firstly would you buy second hard pram? Secondly I've seen the one I like and will fit perfect in my car bugaboo chameleon going for limited edition safari. This beast comes with a price tag of £600 + second hand. Would you buy it considering the price and being second hand even if it immaculate condition.

I'm definitely going to get a new car seat so that's not too bad but I'm not sure I'm I'm going to town forfeiting that amount of money on a pram ... Help

2nd hand is fine but not £600! My brand new uppababy vista was about that much.

cleoteacher · 22/06/2015 09:33

I sold my bugaboo camel eon for £480 it was in immaculate condition. A real bargain for that person as it was £1000 new. I got a donkey for £550 second hand recently so it sounds like you would be paying too much. What about not getting a limited addition one? They go for some like £400.

You are getting yourself a bargain considering the cost new but £600 for that one second hand sounds too much. Depending on how close you have your second child you may find you need a double buggy so don't get as much use out of it as you thought you would. That's what happened to me

DD is 19 months and still using my travel system. I have a lightweight maclaren but hate it. So not everyone (in fact no one I know!) ditches their systems for a lightweight stroller.
£600 is a bit much second hand but not completely ridiculous for a perfect condition chameleon. I was looking at second hand donkeys for DC2 due in a few weeks and they were £800. Second the recommendation for a Vista though, in my opinion they are much sturdier than the chameleon.

HazleNutt · 22/06/2015 09:43

Does it come with loads of extras or something? I have the same limited edition, and it's just the fabric that's different, so I would also say that 600 is a bit much for a second hand.

I disagree though that you will necessarily get rid of it, it's a great pram/buggy and way easier to handle than wobbly umbrella strollers, especially if you walk anywhere else besides ideally paved clean sidewalks.

I wouldn't pay that much for a second hand pram, if you do buy second hand make sure you check every tiny bit of the pram right down to the smallest bolts.

We bought second hand for DC2, checked it all over carefully and when DD was 10 weeks old a tiny rivet snapped (completely hidden inside the chassis so not obvious at all) which led to one side of the pram collapsing as we crossed the road. Thankfully I had put reins inside the carry cot!

I ended up buying another pram for £460 new We're still using it now 2 years on and have no intentions of replacing it. Its an Emmaljunga City Cross and is perfect for us.

If you buy the right pushchair for your needs then you won't need to switch at 6 months and in fact other than on MN I know nobody who automatically switches to a Maclaren. I had one for my eldest when we went away and it was bloody awful!

I'm one who has ditched my travel system at 7m for a lightweight stroller. I got sick of how heavy and clunky my pram was, I LOVE my new stroller. Other mums I know from groups etc have asked about it and say they're considering ditching theirs too.

That said, I'm sure there are some travel system models out there that really work longer term. Mine didn't for me, it wasn't cheap (but also wasn't ludicrously expensive!) but for FWIW £600 is a lot for a pram brand new let alone second hand IMO.

Dixie - ours was a black frame, black denim fabic, included maxi cosi car seat, footmuff, parasol etc. was £750 new ( admittedly about 6 years ago). So £5-600 for just pram secondhand does still seem high. I think it would have been that price new by itself

WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 22/06/2015 10:42

Art all that new now would be over £1000 Shock

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 22/06/2015 10:45

Id have no problem buying a second hand pram - however id only do it if the pram suits my needs.

I would never buy a second hand car seat.

Artandco · 22/06/2015 10:48

World - have found online for £845 ( so only £100 more than we paid). That's for Black frame, pebble car seat, adapters and footmuff

foxmitten · 22/06/2015 12:19

I got my second hand cam for £90 inc original bugaboo footmuff, parasol and raincover. You're being fleeced love!

How much is it new?

Our prams were second-hand and great (got one free, bought two second-hand). We only paid about £100 each, retailed new with all the bits for about £1000. They were well-used though.

I paid £600 for a pram brand new, so no, I wouldn't pay that for a second-hand one!

I agree with a few others here, you'll end up using a buggy around 6 months mark with your little one as it's lighter to get around.

I have a Silver Cross pram, it's big and bulky but I used it for both of the DC and will use it again for third baby due in a few months' time. I don't want to waste money on another one because I know how quickly they grow out of it.

I have a second-hand cot for this reason...by the age of two they can use a bed.

JazzAnnNonMouse · 22/06/2015 19:56

If it's a system that you can fold without having to take the carrycot/seat off then it might be ok - my biggest bug bear was having to take the whole bloody thing apart. No matter how easy it looked it was just one more hassle I didnt need
