Not sure whether this really classes as pregnancy but what the hell.

First baby on the way in April.. starting to think about nursery and spare room and such, was wondering whether anyone could advise on the best type of flooring.

The room/house is warm, so not overly worried about warmth as a factor.. at the moment I think carpet would be quieter for walking in and out, but laminate would help keep room cool and also be better for cleaning up spills and such like?

Mums advice would be great.

laminate if not going to be used for crawing as its more hygenic...

Quootiepie · 14/11/2006 15:01

but then you have slipping with baby risks,,, errr.... carpet.

VoodooBanana · 14/11/2006 15:01

I got the lam and I love it.

i think carpet would feel cosier and comfier later on for playing on the floor (but then i have an irrational hatred of laminate). id' strongly recommend either over seagrass, which we have throughout the house which is virtually indestructible and excellent at coping with being peed on but very rough on baby and parental knees.

See this is how my mind keeps working... swings and roundabouts.... thinking laminate with carpet stepping stones!!

Depends,

Is this going to be the "playroom". My ds plays in his bedroom, and I thank God for carpet constantly. He is always falling and smacking his head on the floor. We had an extra thick pad put under the carpet as well, so it cushions the fall.

stardustmom · 14/11/2006 15:08

we got carpet mainly because if the baby ever toppled over - it would be soft and cushy to land on...i also think it makes a warmer playing surface, something to think about if the baby will ever be playing on the floor in the winter. we also bought wool carpet so there are less chemical fumes than non-wool carpets.

MrsBadger · 14/11/2006 15:10

perhaps laminate and a rug?

we have the same dull hardwearing guaranteed-stainproof (v handy) carpet everywhere in the house (except our room which we haven't got round to doing yet) and it makes the space feel a lot bigger. Also easy to mop spills off, even red wine and coffee.

Not sure how laminate would keep the room cool...

belgianmama · 14/11/2006 15:22

Come from non-carpet country, so I'd say laminate with thick rug. Coushiony for falls yet easily replacably if irreversibly stained.

sunnysideup · 14/11/2006 15:31

oh laminate laminate laminate.....your baby will be SICK on the carpet, more times than you can possibly imagine at the moment

samuelthomas · 14/11/2006 16:47

I have laminate now and love it, easy to clean etc. Mind you live in a bungalow so noise is not an issue. We had carpet in our last house which got badly stained in ds1 bedroom not from sick but because I kept spilling/ds kept spitting out Calpol in the middle of the night!! Really bad stains that just would not come out.

Friend of mine has Amtico which is much quieter than laminate and slightly spongey. We are about to put Karndean tiles in our bathroom which is like Amtico but cheaper. I would definitely have had that throughout the house if I had known about it rather than Laminate. (Our kids have happily crawled etc on Laminate without any problems at all. In fact carpet burns were worse!!!)

Tutter · 14/11/2006 16:48

carpet

never laminate

Skyler · 14/11/2006 17:06

Carpet def. You will all slip on laminate.

Flossam · 14/11/2006 17:09

We have laminate. We recently did up DS's room and I was gunning for carpet, but as the floors were already laminate and would have to be ripped up I relented. We have a large mat down. Cost was a big issue for us TBH. Friends also thought I would be mad to replace the laminate as others say it is so easy to clean up mess. Can't say I've ever slipped on it in a room before either - if a worry get some cosy slipper socks!
