Big first baby - bigger second baby?!

Hello

We're now TTC #2 and while I know I don't have to worry just yet as I'm not even pregnant I can't help thinking about this...

My DS was ten days overdue when I finally gave birth (was induced) and he weighed 10lb 3oz BlushConfused no GD, no signs of him being really big, I have a normal bmi but am tall. Awful labour ended with forceps and shoulder dystocia and was pretty horrendous.

I'm not scared of giving birth again per say... Just a tad concerned about having another whopper and being overdue again!

Likelihood of having another big baby? Or bigger?!

I will not be induced again. So would requesting a c section if I go overdue be a good idea?

My second baby was smaller than my first.

9lb 2oz v. 8lb 15oz.

1st was 7lbs 7, 2nd was 8lbs 8 and third was 8lbs 2, but three weeks early - the other two were born on their due dates.

Incidentally, mine were all EMCS - and they would have done a CS if I'd gone over.

My second was a pound lighter and only one week earlier. My consultant had a theory that 2nd babies are more usually smaller not bigger than first babies. in my case he was right.

First was 9.2 second was 7.2. I imagine this may have been down to me not eating all of the cakes second time roundGrin

First born at 43 weeks - 10lb
Second born at bang on 40 weeks - 7lb 15oz

I did eat for BRITAIN with my first.

I only put on 2st in my first pregnancy and everyone said I was tiny - ha!

I shall be watching what I eat for sure though.

Ds was a day early 8lb 9ozs, not massive but on the bigger side of average, dd was 11 days overdue and 8lb.

Dd1 induced 39+4 8lb 1 dd2 40+4 8lb 11oz....ds1 currently measuring 38cm at 33.3 weeks x

First 6 days late and 8 14 DS
Second 4 days early 8 6 DD

DD1 7lb 12, 11 days overdue with hideous labour, ventouse and forceps due to massive head (99th percentile). Knew I would settle for nothing less than an ELCS for a second!
DD2 9lb exactly by ELCS on due date. Head off the chart so made the right choice!

My second was much smaller

Dd1 was born at 40+4

  • 8lbs 2oz
Dd2 born at 36+6 - 6lbs 14oz

I did make much more effort to eat better second time around. First time around I gained almost 4 stone. Second time I gained 1.5 stone so I think that definitely had an effect.

1st - 8lb 3oZ (I ate loads!)
2nd - 7lb 8 (I was fairly healthy eating and lost lots of weight prior to conception)
3rd - 8lbs 5oz (gained lots of weight prior to pregnancy but then diagnosed with diabetes and lost lots of weight during pregnancy. Had very good sugar control during pregnancy and obstetrician felt baby would be 8lbs-ish because of babies I have rather than diabetes).

All babies born at 39weels

I suspect this time you'll have a glucose tolerance test during pregnancy (to make sure no Diabetes) and probably offered induction if you go over but I'm just guessing based on what a friend who had a 10-lber was advised.

1st - 9lbs 12ozs - DS born at 40+6 - Third degree tear
2nd - 10lbs 2.5ozs - DD born at 40+10 - Second degree tear

Just be prepared for anything... I had exactly the same weigh gain both times, and they were both mainly long... DD was checked out for her blood sugars as she was over 4.5kg, but all fine...

Also they both were at least 91st percentile for head size, which accounts for the tears...

Now pregnant with third, so we'll see...

Hello! my DC1 was born 9lb 11 so my consultant referred me from day one for a growth scan at 37 weeks- if looking overly huge then he wanted to induce to avoid complications I had with DC1 (massive PPH)so you may well be offered the same.
Had my scan and DC2 was 8lb at 37 weeks, big but not dangerously so, so will be induced end of next week at 40+5 if not gone before.

My first full term was 9lb 10oz and my 2nd full term 7lb 11oz

You may well find that they offer you an ELCS due to the shoulder dystocia and birth history anyway.

Mine were the same weight born though, so it doesn't always follow that second babies are heavier than first babies.

Sorry to hear about your traumatic delivery.... shoulder dystocia can be very scary.
Is there a medical reason why you will not be induced again, or is that your choice?

Hopefully they would do growth scans for subsequent pregnancies, so you would have a. Opportunity o make a plan if it looked like another big one.

Others have mentioned head size.... might be worth checking that as its probably more relevant to a difficult delivery than birth weight.
