Delivery of placenta - confused!

Hi, I've been asked to put together my birth plan. I need to decide if I want to have physiological third stage of labour or active third stage. From what I've read it seems that active third stage is often preferred by hospitals but I want to do what's best for the baby at the end of the day. I just wondered what other people are opting for, as I can't decide!.

Thanks, Sarah

I had a natural waterbirth and delivered placenta naturally within about five mins - if that tbh. I got out of the pool, they sat me on a chair and told me to push - it went flying across the room!

No afterpains or anything.

I was ambivilent about it beforehand - if it took a while I'd have the jab, but wasn't massively fussed, despite being REALLY fussed about the actual birth.

If you choose physiological they'll let you try naturally first and intervene if there's a delay/problem anyway.

My first birth it was automatically given with my consent. My second in 2013 it wasn't until after 15 minutes it was necessary (I can't quite remember why, bleeding maybe?)

It seems to be standard practice in my local area to have a physiological third stage until and unless maternal request or medical necessity apply now.

Last time I had the jab straight away but the midwife hauled the placenta out !
I'm sure this had something to do with the heavy loss I had for 3 months ...

This baby I'm hoping for a home birth in a pool and would like delayed clamping when cord has completely stopped pulsating.

I would like to try to deliver the placenta naturally but depending on how things have gone, may then have the jab but will make sure I'm upright and if the midwife lays a finger on the cord god help her!

I opted for delayed cord clamping and no objection.

I ended up with an emergency cord cut, non-delivery of placenta despite an injection and manual delivery with only gas and air.

Just warning you it might not happen the way you plan Grin
