I read somewhere that along with the obvious cheeses and pates etc that you should also avoid the 99 Mr Whippy ice creams. I'm currently 14 weeks pregnant and just tucked into a burger king thick shake and realised they are made from the same stuff. Should I be worried???

I thought it was not Mr Whippy as such but ice cream vans. I remember a "lysteria in soft whip ice cream" scare a while back but I think it was to do with ice cream vans and how they store the mix.

I was just told to avoid ice-creams from ice cream vans because of hygiene problems. It's usually whipped ice-cream that is mentioned rather than just Mr Whippy ice-cream.

I've just had a Mr Whippy from dodgy van today
Ate them last pg and OK. But now you mention it I do remember hearing something about it....

GeorginaA · 03/05/2004 17:50

Well if we were supposed to avoid thick shakes from fastfood restaurants then I'm doomed... lost count over the number of times I've had one while taking ds to McDonalds because I was too knackered to prepare "real food"

alexsmum · 03/05/2004 19:07

Yes avoid mr whippy ice creams. They're not kept cold enough and can contain listeria.AND as my mother always used to say when we were kids, the ice cream men don't always wash their hands when they've been to the toilet!!!

I avoided them (whippies, not ice cream men),But I love soft ice cream, so got the real thing and let it melt a bit!Better value for money too... Mr Whippy is about 95%air!

cuppy · 03/05/2004 19:53

Yep - I was told by midwife to avoid ice cream vans - not the ice cream.

serenequeen · 03/05/2004 19:55

nannyjo, yes you should avoid mr whippy type ice cream. should you be worried about today? i wouldn't unless you have any symptoms. usually the hygiene in fast food chains is good, so you'll probably be fine.

Thanx for all the replies. I guess it all depends on how desperate I am for a chocolate thick shake. 6 months feels like a life time without them!!

I've never heard of it (I'm a food microbiologist so an expert on Listeria) the milk is pasteurised so I don't think there is a risk.

IME Mr Whippies should be compulsory especially with flakes on top :D

This week for me it's chocolate raisins which I suppose are quite healthy fruit after all

suedonim · 04/05/2004 01:37

For some odd reason, most oil platforms have Mr Whippy ice cream machines installed. They come with health warnings, to do with the tubing being a cosy home for milk to breed bacteria. I haven't heard of any 'bears' succumbing to noxious diseases from a '99' but then these are the super-cautious oil co's that have in recent years banned cocktail sticks offshore, in case someone accidentally jags themselves in the mouth (what, this can't happen onshore??); issued a warning about tripping over trouser turn-ups and told staff they must walk down the stairs in single file, in silence and holding the handrail, for fear of falling. I kid you not.

Do you all live in the Carribean? It's about 2 degress here and ice cream is the last thing on my mind. Any problems with hot chocolate?
