Collarbone pain? Pre-eclampsia?

Has anyone had a pain in their collarbone? I'm 28 weeks and have read that this might be a sign of pre-eclampsia and as I am high risk (had pre-eclampsia in first pregnancy but not until 41 weeks) I wondered if anyone has any insight?

I had a 'blip' about three weeks ago where my blood pressure went up a bit but when I went in to to be monitored it was fine and all the blood tests for PE came back normal. My blood pressure was fine on Wednesday, and my urine was clear, no protein at all. My hands are a little swollen (the left more so than the right) but until this sudden pain in the collarbone came on, I was assuming the swollen hands was just a touch of carpal tunnel brought on by knitting. I am a little breathless but think my iron might be low.

I have tried to measure my BP using a home monitor borrowed from a friend but it has come up with readings all over the place, never the same measurement twice, so I'm assuming its rubbish.

Am I getting worried over nothing and this is likely to be wind pain or just general pregnancy pain? I feel shit but that's par for the course, isn't it?

Can heartburn/indigestion cause collarbone pain? Been full of acid recently...

I would call your maternity triage if you have one at the local hospital, they may want you to pop in for monitoring. I had late onset PE in my first pregnancy, and then high blood pressure from 20 weeks in my second. It went much higher about 28 weeks due to a surge in hormones apparently and my medication was increased.

What readings did you get on home monitor? Did you sit upright with both feet on the floor and left arm at heart height? You can mess up readings if you take them wrong.

anyothergirl · 30/05/2015 19:46

Hi Foggy, yes I followed the instructions very carefully regarding body position, cuff position, machine settings etc. and these are the readings I got (5 minutes between each reading as recommended in instructions); 124/86 then 120/72 then 117/64 then 123/66 then 121/84. I then gave it up because the damn thing seemed more likely to make my bp go up than give me a consistent reading!

Nah they're ok, all within normal range. BP does fluctuate from reading to reading, today I got 122/91 and 99/74 a few minutes apart.

anyothergirl · 30/05/2015 19:57

If its normal to get big variations like that a few minutes apart then how are we supposed to actually know when it is a cause for concern? Confused

Actually you can see there that it was higher when you started and went down to very normal as you sat there. It went back up probably because you were getting frustrated :)

Foggymist · 30/05/2015 20:02

They're not really big variations, they're all in normal range. I burst out laughing doing a reading once and it went from 120/80ish to 149/98 or something like that.

foggy this is exactly what gets me about blood pressure checks! - its like trying not to think of a pink elephant, I'm sure my BP goes up at the sight of a cuff, white coat syndrome. I just didn't realise it could go up and down that much from reading to reading, so thanks for that!

That's really not much of a range there, I shouldn't worry. In PES a BP of 140/90 and above (consistently) is a marker. Although for peace of mind and because of previous just give the mat ward a call.
Which collar bone is it?
I get dreadful indigestion pain in my right, it's called referred pain.

Foggymist · 30/05/2015 20:11

Don't get me started on stupid bp checks!! I had pre e too, bp stayed very high after birth. They took no account of the difference in taking my bp when I was resting doing nothing for ages and then when I had been in special care feeding baby with the crazy breastfeeding cramps, hobbled back up to be met with a bp machine immediately and a "ooh it's very high" Hmm

anyothergirl · 30/05/2015 20:13

Yes Bayrans its the right collarbone. I suspect it may be indigestion/wind as I had something similar after a gallbladder op.

I'm being paranoid aren't I? Hmm

foggy In my last pregnancy the midwife got an insanely high reading, panicked, redone it, got another insanely high reading, lay me down and started talking about emergency transport to hospital and then laughed and announced, "oh im using a child's cuff! Whoops!". The she wondered why my BP was a tad high when she got the right cuff...

No not paranoid, you're listening to your body, and I'd be the same if I had PES first time round.

IfYouWereARiverIdLearnToFloat · 30/05/2015 21:05

If you have particularly bad trapped wind which is irritating your diaphragmatic nerves this can cause referred shoulder/collarbone pain as the same nerves supply this area.

With your gallbladder op if it was laparoscopic they would have filled your belly with gas which takes time to disperse - it irritates the nerves of your diaphragm & this gives referred pain at the shoulder.

I'd probably phone your maternity unit for their opinion but all the usual things to ease trapped wind should help. Smile
