Perineal massage

Hi, I'm 35+4 days. It was recommended at my antenatal class that we do perineal massage to try to prevent tearing. I had a go at it after I had a shower this morning. I found it slightly painful and got a stinging sensation, is this normal? Also, does anyone know if it's ok to do it without using any type of lubrication as I'd prefer to do it without?

Thanks, Sarah

It will sting a little, but its good to try and stretch everything.

I used vitamin e oil, did it as frequently as i could. I didnt tear when i had ds, just a small graze internally

You can use sunflower oil, which is what our NCT teacher told us to use, makes it much easier. I found it easier to do sitting in bed on a towel one thumb at a time

Hi, thank you for your advice, I might give it a go with sunflower oil. It might also be easier sitting up in bed rather than standing in the shower.
