I know that during pregnancy you're not meant to take the oral thrush tablets, but could I just buy the pessary and cream over the counter? I have read to insert pessary by hand, not with the applicator, I know I'm supposed to go to the doctors but it's a two week wait and I don't think I can put up with this itchiness for so long! So do you think it will be ok if I just buy the treatment? Thanks

I just called my doctor and asked to speak to him on the phone, he them did me prescription to collect. Can you do that?

Lottiedoubtie · 29/05/2015 17:49

Is it still a two week wait if you phone at 8am tomorrow and ask for an emergency appt?

Do you have a MW appt soon? You could discuss it there.

Try having a chat with a pharmacist.

The short answer is- normally yes, you can use the cream and pessary (no applicator) when pregnant- BUT nobody on the Internet knows you/your medical history and so for you specifically it might not be a good idea so warrants a chat with someone qualified.

May09Bump · 29/05/2015 17:51

I'd call your midwife for advice and also speak to the pharmacist. Really don't put up with it for that long.

Snowflake15 · 29/05/2015 17:52

Thanks all - unfortunately my MW appointment is also 2 weeks away. I don't have any weird medical history or anything, I will try and call GP on Monday but it's so difficult with full time work a 2 hour commute away. Hate thrush have always been susceptible to itSad

Luke warm salt water baths and paracetemol are good to ease the itching

Gr33dyeggs · 29/05/2015 18:02

I had it at 12 weeks, like you I've always been prone. I used a a pessary without the applicator and then cream for a week. Told midwife and she said it was fine.

liane123 · 29/05/2015 18:03

I used to suffer terribly with thrush and spent a small fortune on canestan. Now if I get thrush I have an activia yoghurt evetyday, cut down on bread coffee n choc and its usually gone within a week :0) x x x good luck!

Steph1502 · 29/05/2015 18:04

You can use pessary and cream whilst pregnant. If you go to your local pharmacy they can offer this free on minor ailments (in the UK) so it saves you going to the doc x

ZenNudist · 29/05/2015 18:05

It's fine to use a pessary. The only reason to get to docs is to get free one rather than paying £12.

I had awful thrush in pregnancy and took pro biotics to help. I also later tried citricidal (not with probiotics) which helped get it under control

LakeOfDreams · 29/05/2015 18:08

Get an number for your community MW and leave a message they'll pick it up tomorrow morning and mine call back everyone in priority order but they might be able to give you some advice or even a prescription. Or call 101 and the OOH GP might be able to write you a prescription

Worriedaboutwee · 29/05/2015 18:08

Pharmacist wouldbt give it to me without a prescription when I was notably pregnant so had to send my husband to get it for me! If I had no bump I'd have lied to get it!

Steph1502 · 29/05/2015 18:12

Sounds like an overly cautious pharmacist worried they definitely provide thrush treatment free as I've already had it (2 weeks ago was horrible!!) and they were well aware I was pregnant. x

Snowflake15 · 29/05/2015 18:19

I'm just going to go in there - bump is still small (23 weeks) and easily hidden by jumper or coat! I just can't abide waiting 2 weeks for exactly the same thing, thanks all for advice Steph I will ask about minor ailments but am happy to pay, anything to sort this! Heartburn and leg cramps are enough to deal with Smile

I've always suffered and have just bought cream/pessary whole pregnant. Docs not even interested in seeing me and wouldn't prescribe either!

ARV1981 · 29/05/2015 18:52

Natural yogurt works for me. It sounds gross, but is surprisingly soothing. Just dab it on the area and use a panty liner. Get live natural yogurt not a fruity one with loads of sugar in - that would make it worse!

Also, eating natural yogurt helps stop it recurring - I have a big bowl of yogurt every morning with granola. Yum!

Snowflake15 · 29/05/2015 20:43

Arv have been considering yoghurt but just always seemed so crazy - will definitely try to eat it more though Smile

I had this problem the other day. Bad case of thrush and couldn't get an appointment I phoned my midwife and she said for me to ask for a call back from the doctor. He called me within a few hours and prescribed me a pessary over the phone.

rastamam · 29/05/2015 21:54

Did you tell the receptionist you are pregnant? they were booking me an appointment for 2 weeks away and then I mentioned I was pregnant and they got me straight in to see the nurse who can do thrush stuff so may be worth seeing if you can see the nurse? also pharmacists can advise on this stuff & sell you stuff correctly dont worry!

traceybaybee · 29/05/2015 22:41

I got an emergency appointment at my docs (no appointments for over a week) and got my prescription for canesten. Ahhh the relief was immense lol

bumpertobumper · 30/05/2015 00:40

I had terrible thrush all through one of my pregnancies.
mW told me sometimes this happens and it is a case off managing rather than curing... she said it was fine to use canesten cream, and to put live yogurt on a tampon as well as externally and eating it.
lots of washing with cold water, no soap, especially not any thing scented, loose cotton clothes, no pants whenever at home. cut down on bread/yeast and sugar.
between that and the heartburn I was looking forward to labour - both gone the moment I gave birth (but dandruff came backHmm )

SonceyD0g · 30/05/2015 00:49

Yogurt and baby oil be gone tomorrow

S2b16 · 30/05/2015 12:09

I just bought the pessary and cream from the supermarket, the Dr prescribed it when I was about 8 weeks and said it was safe throughout pregnancy. So when I got thrush again at 30 weeks and couldn't get a Drs app I just bought it. It was £11.50 tho so if you can get a prescription it will work out cheaper
