Trapped nerve

Think I have a trapped nerve, possibly sciatica. V painful from base of spine down my left bum check. Comes and goes and varies in how much it hurts, usually after sitting down, and hurts when I try and walk.

Is this pregnancy related or just plain unlucky?

It could be either. I experienced something similar during pregnancy - I had a couple of days when I could barely walk at about 6 months. My MW diagnosed it as pubis symphisis disorder (I think I spelled that right). A couple of sessions of accupuncture resolved it for me, but it may not be for everyone. Speak to your MW about it.

lulumama · 11/11/2006 18:03

sounds like sciatica, which can be pregnancy related as the uterus grows and presses on nerves....it can persist or disappear as pregnancy goes on....MW might be able to suggest ways to alleviate the pain..

Daisypops · 11/11/2006 20:23

Hi bumperlicious, I have something similar and was told by MW its caused by everything stretching and the extra weight. The pain is in my coccyx and across the top of my bum cheeks. Its really painful when I get up from been in bed or sitting down. MW said baths should help (they haven't helped me!) she also said I can see a physiotherapist if it gets unbearable. I think someone on another thread said get on all fours as that takes some weight off your spine, but I'd mention it to your MW next time youu see her. HTH. x

Do you have a birthing ball? If so, deflate it a bit so that you don't squash boobs or bump and drape yourself over it face down. Rock backwards and forwards slowly, gradually increasing the range of the rock. This eases the joints and gently stretches them. You may find a pillow over the ball more comfy too.

If you don't have a ball, make yourself a very high mound of pillows/quilts/folded blankets (higher than you expect, remember they will compress) and drape yourself over that. You won't be able to get the same extent of rocking, but it should help a bit.

I had this when I was pregnant. I had it for about a month I think. I couldn't walk properly. It was at the beginning of my pregnancy. One day it just went.

GILL74 · 11/11/2006 20:36

Bumperlicious I had pain along my coccyx and hip throughtout pregnancy attended physio and after having ds (em c/s), it got so bad i could not turn myself from one side to the other in bed at night, after about 6 sessions with chiropractor, no problems.

Although to this day if i sit for long periods of time and then try and stand up and walk i do feel some discomfort.

Thanks for all the responses girls. Sorry not to reply sooner, been lying on the sofa going bleughhh for pretty much the whole weekend!

Just been to the doctor (MW? Huh! What MW? Sorry - another story!) and she agreed it sounds like a trapped nerve. Best thing apparently is to take some paracetamol and make sure I am walking around on it, rather than sitting around for long periods. Disappointed rally as that is really going to interupt my schedule of sitting around on the sofa going bleeeuughh, and to be quite frank I'm lucky if I have to energy to get up to go to the loo at the moment!

Thanks for all the tips though. Just another example of my body falling apart at the seams - humph!

Hi ladies

Been away for a very long week on a residential course. Was actually feeling much better, was sleeping through the night, MS slowing going away then wednesday night my trapped nerve became agony! I couldn't move my leg or put any weight on it without being in excrutiating pain. Tried having a bath to ease it then nearly got stuck! Thought I would have to call the hotel reception to get someone to come and rescue me! Called NHS direct and oncall local doctor who were all v v unhelpful and the mean NHS direct women made me cry! Fortunately my mum only lives about 3/4 hour from where I was staying and had to get her to come and rescue me so at least I could be somewhere familiar. And DH picked me up and took me home last night. Feel much better now but trapped nerve has still not gone and I'm worried it'll get worse again. What can I do while I'm pregnant? I'd rather get this sorted before I get huge!

hiya, i had sciatica really badly with both pregnancy for the first 3 or 4 months, but when the bunp moved up and out, it got much much better. It came back a bit with my first towards the end, but it hasnt this time. it was a really sharp pain in my buttock like you describe , so hopefully you will find yours goes as you get bigger and the weight moves off whatever its pressing on at the moment. good luck xxxxx

Bump - just because I need more sympathy!

Piffle · 27/11/2006 16:42

osteopath is what you need
I had terrible sciatica with dd
My god like osteo sorted it
well worth the hassle

biglips · 27/11/2006 16:42

bump - i had this when i was pg and due to my old job i was sitting on the chair most of the day taking calls, i has to sit side ways in the end as i was in agony. I told my midwife as i was having a antelnatal checkover anyway and she just said to go for a swim....

that night i couldnt be bothered going as i was big and knackered so i just relaxed for the WHOLE evening (i had been getting carried away tidying the house up and possibly that kicked off the sciatica) and it went overnight - aaaahhhhh!!

biglips · 27/11/2006 16:43

midwife said that if the sciatica gets any worse i had to go back in and have an injection to release the pain

bumperlicious · 27/11/2006 16:53

Much as I hate injections biglips I probably could have done with that on thursday! My big question is if it flairs up again where it is unbearable is it worth going to A & E, can they actually do anything when you are PG?

I had a similar agonising pain for about a fortnight - whenever I walked and put my left foot down a pain would shoot up my leg into my bum and it was sooo painful. It was diagnosed as 'sacroiliac instability' by my not-very-helpful GP. I was at my wits end - couldn't walk anywhere and was basically housebound and miserable

However, three sessions with an osteopath sorted me right out. I was pretty sceptical but she has worked a miracle as far as I am concerned. Mine is experienced at treating pregnant women, so you would need to ring a few I expect and have a chat with them about your symptoms. Honestly, she saved me - my GP had told me I was going to 'have to put up with it' (and that was with 6 weeks to go!).

GOOD LUCK.

octobermum · 28/11/2006 10:54

It could be i had this when pg dd i had it for about 6mths and still get now and again now (dd 3 at the end of jan).

The worst night i had a dead left leg and realy bad cramp in my right leg tried to wake dh to help and he just said "oh turn over and go to sleep" rolled over and snored i just layed there and cried because i could not move. He couldn't work out why wouldn't speak to him the next day.

bumperlicious · 28/11/2006 19:22

Thank you for the sympathy everyone. Feeling better now! I've just got to the point where I get really p*ssed of if people ask me if I'm alright and what's wrong. I just want to shout "No, I'm not alright, not only do I have a have 24 hour morning sickness, but I also have a trapped nerve so am in constant pain, am dog tired and feeling just generally like poo, pretty much the same as I have when you have asked for the last 3 weeks - so let's just assume until further notice the NO I AM NOT OK!"
Phew! Glad I got that off my chest. Sorry guys, I'm not one to suffer in silence!
Coincidentally though, tomorrow a local ostepaths is having a taster evening session of all the treatments they offer so I might pop along ot that and have a chat with them.
Thanks for the recommendations girls.
