What were/are your maternity wear essentials?

Hey all,

Even though I still have quite a while to go before I will need maternity wear, I am nonetheless already thinking about what I should be getting a bit later down the line. I don't have a huge amount of money to spend, but since I have been working with a very very limited wardrobe for a couple of years now, I am also excited to finally get some new stuff!

Unfortunately I will need to start wearing maternity stuff in the summer, but will have my last trimester in the depths of winter Hmm. If anything could double up as nursing wear then that would be good as well.

So I'd love to know what really worked for you, what was a total waste, and what you'd do differently next time round.

So far I am thinking (not to get all at once)

  • Some maternity leggings (I've heard new look and h and m are good?)
  • A pair of underbump maternity jeans (apparently these are also good post partum? Is that true?)
  • some soft black loose trousers (like the lovely bamboo ones seraphine does)
  • A number of cheap vest tops/t-shirts
  • A shirt and a couple of nice coloured (non maternity) cardigans
  • A midi length dress I can wear in summer, or layer up in winter
  • MAYBE a tube skirt (I think new look do them).

Am I forgetting anything very obvious?

I'm wearing George (Asda) over bump maternity leggings, £12 for 2 pairs, and for tops I've just bought long cami tops for layering (£3) and plain stretchy t-shirts (£2.80) from Primark! Over the summer I'm planning on getting normal dresses with the stitching that sits under your boobs rather than at the waist, or body con dresses a size up. I did have to go to Debenhans and invest in some bigger sized Maternity bras though, they are sooooo comfy!

in my experience, stretchy vest tops, long/loose cardigans, kimono jackets and floaty tops will serve you well after baby arrives as well as through your pregnancy. Add a few bright scarves for interest/warmth and you're sorted for your top half. None of this needs to be maternity wear. Bottom half you probably have to fork out for something maternity specific - but you can get away with a tube skirt, pair of jeans and some leggings if you are pushed.

EBay is your friend! I've not bought anything new yet, and don't intend to! I will be getting over bump jeans for when om bigger, but I'm loving a pair of mamas and papas under bump that I got for not much more than a fiver on ebay. I will definitely be wearing them post bump!
