Is there a specific reason you are having an early scan?

mears · 11/11/2006 08:32

Vaginal scan will not cause miscarriage, however why are you having it done as early? I have often posted that I think early scans for 'reassurance' often create more problems by not demonstrating a good picture. Then that results in another scan in a couple of weeks. There will be no harm done in waiting.

because i had a mis miscarriage before at 6 weeks the consultant requested i go but there are several reasons i have dounts,
a) they may not see heart beat this early which will cause more stress and worry
b) i worry the internal scan may cause problems
what do u think x

I'm not sure I like these early scans. There seem to be soooo much variations on heartbeats, growth etc... of the fetus in these early weeks that they can worry people more than necessasary. My sis went for an early scan with her second pg as she M/C the time before. Her scan was at 6+3, they couldn't find a heartbeat but told her it could be quite normal at 6+3 not to see one. Not to worry and come back in two weeks! Can you imagine how agonising the two weeks was. When she did go back the news wasn't good for her unfortunately but she still says she wishes she hadn't bothered with the early scan. She then wouldn't of had a nightmare 2 week wait.

8 weeks is a much better time to go, there should be something happeing by then. Although it is a long wait and a very difficult time, sometimes no news is good news, IYKWIM. It's very inconclusive so early.

Best of luck to you though

hi nadine........i agree with mears......the anxiety caused by going for a scan, not seeing a heartbeat and having to wait a week or so can be agonising.....it is unlikely you will see the heart beat before 7 + weeks...as i know from personal experience in both pregnancies.

the scan itself will not cause you any harm......it is the waiting though!!

will you worry more having the scan and possibly not seeing a heart beat or by just waiting it out until 7 + weeks?

i know it is hard......i've been there.....xxx hope all works out

mears · 11/11/2006 08:38

Internal scan does not cause miscarriage, so don't worry about that. Pregnancy is more likely to be seen vaginally. The question is whether you need to see it now or are you happy to wait. The consultant will be assuming that is what you want rather than there being a clinical need. It really is up to you.

Hello everyone
I am 7+6 weeks and am going for an early dating scan on Saturday (8 weeks). I wanted to have the scan to put my mind at ease and to have concrete evidence for us to show our parents when we tell them about my pregnancy on Christmas Day.

But reading this thread has made me worry that an early scan will not reassure me in the way that I want it to. Should I cancel?

Lottie x

I had a scan at 7 weeks, as had previous m/c, they saw a heartbeat. It reassured me, however I would have been devastated if they hadnt been able to find it... the reckon 7 weeks is usually ok, as long as you are certain with dates.

No one can advise you whether to go or not... personally I would, but thats me.. impaitent annie!!!

I'd actually booked a scan for 8 weeks, but we decided it was a lot of money to spend when we were also intending to pay for a nuchal scan at 12 weeks. In the end we cancelled the early scan and waited until the nuchal scan. I'm quite glad we did as you could see lots of detail at 12 weeks: at 8 we probably would have only had the reassurance of a heartbeat.

I worked on the assumption that if there was no bleeding or pain at any point then everything was OK.

I think an early scan can be reassuring but I wouldn't have one done earlier than 8 weeks as before that it may not be possible to see a heartbeat even if everything turns out to be OK. Before the 12-week nuchal scan I did worry a little about the possibility of a missed miscarriage but I still think we made the right decision not to go for an 8-week scan.

paulaplumpbottom · 08/12/2006 16:51

8 weeks should be the earliest.

lulumama · 08/12/2006 16:59

8 weeks should mean that the pregnancy is able to be seen relatively easily and the heartbeat should also be easily visible......

early scans can be more of a reassurance when you have had pain / bleeding etc..if all is well...it is a bonus if you have a scan before 12 weeks or so .
