Have a look at the nice guidelines you are supposed to be offered alternatives to induction when induction is discussed with you. You can opt for expectant management which is monitoring scans till you go in to labour on your own. I opted for this and went into spontaneous labour at 42 weeks exactly, I only had one monitoring scan in the end.

You are aware that you can decline induction, and request expectant management aren't you?

The risks and benefits of both courses of action should be explained to you.

Thankyou ladies what is expectant management? They haven't discussed this maybe they will tomorrow.

They won't bring it up Hmm, they book you in for induction as if its the only option.

EM is basically waiting a bit longer, with more monitoring to see how things are. The risk of placental failure does increase (and therefore the risk of stillbirth) but it's still only a tiny % and the risk of failure starts increasing at about 38/39 weeks IIRC.

Induction also has risks - increased likelihood of further intervention (forceps/c-section) and problems (PPH, retained placenta, episiotomy/tearing - due to the increased intervention)

Women should be able to make an informed decision about this, and it makes me really bloody angry that inductions are booked as standard procedure with no real information about either process.

You can,of course, refuse an induction but if you do have one dont think it will automatically be a cascade of intervention that will ultimatly result in a nightmare birth. I had one at 38+3 as i'm a type 1 diabetic and had a dream labour. Pessary went in at 11am,paced about for ages and cramps started about 1ish. Needed a second pessary about 6pm as no progress but by 10pm I was 1cm. Moved to labour ward at 4cm at 3am and delievered exactly 60mins later. No epidural (not for lack of trying baby came so fast the midwife had to shove the anethatist out the way) but managed ok on some liquid morphene and gas and air.

Just wanted to give you a positive story to put you at ease, good luck with everything.

I was induced at 12 days overdue wih my first. I was so fed up of waiting that I welcomed it! I just wanted him out.

A few weeks ago, I was at the day assessment as baby number 2 was being really lazy and not moved all day! The lady next to me was 14 days late and refusing induction. The consultant was strongly urging her to be induced as going over 14 days overdue can be dangerous so she agreed.

Speak to your consultant.

I went into labour at 40 + 13, having declined the 'standard' induction apt.

MayfairMummy · 24/05/2015 22:45

Ds1 41+3. Ds2 41+6. Both home births with no induction but did have 2 sweeps for ds2. Would have been induction for ds2 if he hadn't come that day.

Currently 42 weeks exactly with dc3.induction booked for tomorrow but I'm earlyish 40s so my risks are higher if I go over. On the plus side I started contractions about 1 hour ago but they're not regular enough for me to be sure tonight is the night. (Have had loads of BH this pregnancy).
