Akso very o/weght and in each of my first 2 pgs I put on 2 - 2 1/2 stone, healthy me and healthy big babies resulted, though needed to watch my diet in 3rd trimester because of sugar control issues - not weight issues. This time I have no idea how much I put on as it didn't seem relevant and would just have been another thing to worry over.

PrettyCandles · 10/11/2006 13:23

BTW also healthy results and same sugar issues this time.

Eat healthily anhd sensibly, feel comfortable - ie not hungey, not stuffed - is the important thing.

And congrats!

nadinetd · 10/11/2006 13:23

hi pretty candles,
it baffles me how the midwife expects me not to even put on a 1lb thats just madness, i have read on here about ladies who only put on a couple of lb or even lose weight but i doubt that will be the case for me x

I agree!

I put on 2.5 stone with first baby and was very overweight to begin with. Mostly put on in 1st trimester as eating was the only way to stop feeling sick. Got gestational diabetes and put on nothing in the last 2 months as was on strict diet. But baby got bigger and so did I. It must have been eating me! This time got gestational diabetes from 9 wks and even more strict with diet. As had no sickness this was far easier to stick to and at 22 weeks have actually lost weight overall and am still just about in normal clothes but probably only for another week or so. Baby is fine. There is no way I would believe this was possible before it happened to me. But I have read that if you are bigger unless you got crazy you put on less weight.

WigWamBam · 10/11/2006 13:38

I was heavier than you when I became pregnant - I was over 19 stone. I only put weight on in the last two weeks of the pregnancy through pre-eclampsia, and I actually lost weight right at the beginning because of horrendous morning sickness.

I didn't diet, but I was deliberately careful with what I ate because I didn't want to gain too much and make things difficult for myself. I also found I wanted to stick to eating a good, sensible diet for the sake of the baby, plus I had gestational diabetes so had to be pretty careful with what I ate. I didn't count calories or actively diet, and even with the GD I allowed myself a bit of what I fancied, I just ate a sensible, balanced diet.

There's no point in aiming not to put on any weight at all, and if the midwife has told you to aim for that then she needs a slap. But by the same token you don't have to pile it on "eating for two" either. Eating healthily for you and the baby is what's important, not trying to control your weight.

lulumama · 10/11/2006 13:44

lost 2 stone each pregnancy due to morning sickness

but was overweight...so ate carefully...you need to put weight on..but it does;nt need to be fat, IFYSWIM

am now two stone lighter than before i had children !

Usual weight gain in pregnancy :

increase in breast size- 0.5 kg
placenta - 0.6 kg
foetus - 3.4 kg ( approx!)
amniotic fluid - 0.6 kg
uterus itself - 0.9 kg
increased blood volume 1.5 kg
general extra fluid 1.0 kg

and aprox 3.5 kg fat...which is not a huge amount to loose after wards...as everything else is baby related and will go soon after birth..

eating for two is a myth..approx. 200 extra calories per for the third trimester...which is a couple of slices of brown bread!!

nadine I am very overweight and have been for all my pregnancies. With Ds I only put on 7lb despite the fact I had a 9lb1oz baby plus placenta etc. With DD I didnt put on any weight she was 6lb14 when born, and so far this pregnancy[31wks] have not actually put on weight either. I have never had any issues with my weight in terms of pregnancy apart from this time where I am measuring 4wks bigger, however DD is only 11mths so they think it is probably down to being pregnant in such a quick succession as my DS is just 3 and had a missed mc in between him and dd so basically been pregnant the last 3 n bit years.

tweetyfish · 10/11/2006 14:00

I was 18 st when I became pregnant and actually lost weight , mostly due to improved diet (ate proper meals and generally healthier stuff "for the baby") and also being completely sickened by bread - couldn't even stand the smell of it! My mum also lost weight whilst pregnant.

You might be the same

iPodthereforiPoor · 10/11/2006 14:28

you might find this helpful

Also, simplybe.co.uk have started doing maternity clothes online for 14-32 sizes!! looks ok and not anymore expensive than bigchicks clothes anyway.

iPodthereforiPoor · 10/11/2006 14:36

Also, just a word of advice from someone who is bigger than you are - don't accept prejudiced and rude treatment from medical staff. I was left with severe bruising following an ultrasound scan performed by a midwife who insisted on really pushing the scannng probe really hard into my stomach. It hurt at the time but I didn't complain so she carried on. However it was only when I saw the brusies that I realised that none of the other scans I had recieved had been that hard. I was also give "health promotion advice" about loosing weight from the midwife whilst I was in labour and was being preped for an emergency CS. Time and a place for it think!

Hope this hasn't scare you but I wonder how many others have had similar stories?

Back to your original post - I didn't put on weight till I went on mat leave and just thought sod it and eat like a pig - DONT DO IT!!!!

nadinetd · 10/11/2006 14:46

thanks for all ur tips and advice i hope not to put too much on just hoping to get past 12 weeks at the moment xxxx

I personally think your midwife is being ridiculous saying that!
I was heavier than you when I got pg with ds last year.I watched what I ate and put on about 20lb's all in all which I thought was quite good.I had a textbook pregnancy with absolutely no problems and gave birth to a healthy 9lb2 baby.I'm now pg again(16 wks),and although a little lighter than last year,I'm still heavier than you.I have so far put on about 10lb's,which although isn't ideal,I'm also eating a balanced diet,so I'm not too concerned and neither is my midwife.Seems really daft to say you shouldn't be putting any weight on at all!

star1976 · 10/11/2006 16:24

Just to share my experience! :0
Was 10 1/2 stone when got pregnant with first child who is now 8 years, went up to 13 1/2 stone and have never managed to lose the weight really. Fluctuated between 12 - 12 1/2 stone for years and was 13 stone when got pregnant with my son, who is now 8 months. Only put on 1 stone the whole time, which I put down to me being overweight, and he was 8lb 12 of that! When I had him I was back into my jeans within two weeks.
I think it all depends on the individual. There are no hard and fast rules.
I did managed to get down to 11 st 4 lb but got bored of dieting and have now got back upto 12 stone again!!!!! mad with myself.

I put on about a stone and a half in total.
(i was really overweight to start with, BMI 40)
Weighed myself week after delivery, total overall damage about 2lbs.
I spent a lot of my pg looking for food I could keep down, though!
Blood pressure stayed down as well and had trouble free delivery.

Hope that you have problem free rest of pg, and good luck with everything ((hugs))

Booboobedoo · 10/11/2006 16:53

It's totally different for every woman, and if I followed the 'no more than 200 calories extra per day' guidelines I would be throwing up constantly.

I could barely keep fluids down for the first three month, and still gained 8lbs. (How? How?).

I was only 9st6 to start with, and am now nearly 24 weeks and am 11st11lbs.

I only found this out yesterday, and was stunned. I've had no control over my diet. My body tells me what to eat, and if I don't eat it, I'm sick.

I'd say - worry about it a few months after the birth, and enjoy your pregnancy.

bumperlicious · 10/11/2006 17:02

I'm worried too, because although I am not overweight now, I pretty soon will be because of all the crap that I am eating just to get through the day (8+4wks and though not vomiting am being v funny with food!)

Normally I am a v healthy eater, and have to be to keep my weight down, but I just can't face most foods, only really stodgy and bad things like crisps and KFC and coco pops - how can my body be craving them they have no nutritional value? Can't even face any vegetables and very little fruit.

marymillington · 10/11/2006 17:04

Try not to worry. I was still carrying babyweight from my first when got pg this time, am now coming up to 29 weeks and have put on less than half a stone and its all bump. So I am hopeful.

I think the key thing is - if you can -to gently work on your fitness for birth, do pg yoga/swimming etc and keep active, so that you feel as well as you can and feel like you can shed any excess afterward.

Booboobedoo · 10/11/2006 17:04

Bumperlicious: I was the same in my first trimester. Go easy on yourself. The baby will take what it needs.

I went from home-made granary bread and organic veg to ready-brek and white-sliced with Nutella.

Baby is perfect.

bumperlicious · 10/11/2006 17:15

Thanks Boo! Just got to get through it any way I can at the moment! Mmmm sausages for dinner...
