9+4 at first GP appointment - is that a problem?

I'm 6+5 now, but due to the vagaries of work schedules, holiday schedules and waiting for a docs appointment, I will be 9+4 when I first see the GP.

The nurse said on the phone that this was absolutely fine "as long as I was feeling okay", and wouldn't be a problem re. booking scans etc but to call back and make an emergency appointment if I felt bad or like I needed to see someone.

But one of my friends was a bit Shock and made me feel like I was being very lax and like I should be battering on their door trying to get in there this week.

This is my first but I'm feeling quite relaxed and happy and am not having any symptoms except for tender boobs and mega-tiredness. I don't have any underlying health conditions and I feel like the NHS website is pretty comprehensive on what foods to avoid etc...

You'll be fine - all the dr will do is refer you to the MW.

They may want to squeeze the MW appointment in pretty quickly so you can get your 12 week scan at the right time though.

Congratulations!

Up to you really. I personally am the type who would want my blood tests done sooner rather than later and they do an early Screening test which is optional for Down's syndrome now and is more accurate before 14 weeks, so I guess those would be the only things I would be thinking about. Chances are though the relaxed approach is good for you and will make your pregnancy fly by!

LorryHen · 21/05/2015 15:58

I first went to the doctors at 9 weeks, had my booking appointment and bloods at 11+5 and scan at 12+5, the downs screening was all done in time and the midwife can't really tell you anything important they just give you loads of leaflets. Just make sure you're taking folic acid and vitamin d x

FinnJuhl · 21/05/2015 15:59

That's ok, but they'll want to make sure you're taking Folic acid as early in the pregnancy as possible, so start now if you're not already. The GP won't do any actual tests till after 12 weeks.

slightlyconfused85 · 21/05/2015 16:02

I went at 9 + 3- had a scan at 13 weeks and was able to have all the screening. Can't see a problem as long as you're taking folic acid

goldenhen · 21/05/2015 16:05

Waheeeeey thanks everyone. Yep, I started taking Pregnacare as soon as I found out so that has my folic acid and Vit D covered. I've been craving spinach and strawberries so I think my diet's quite high in folate too! I'll just keep going to bed at 10pm and praying that I manage to stave off morning sickness...

I didn't see anyone until 11 weeks either time (didn't see the GP at all, self referred to the midwife). It's policy here to do booking in at 10-11 weeks.

lauraa4 · 21/05/2015 16:25

I had my first GP appointment at 9 weeks, midwife at 11 weeks and then '12 week scan' at 14 weeks.

Just do as everyone else is saying and take your folic acid, don't eat anything dodgy and you will be fine :)

Congratulations!

makeminea6x · 21/05/2015 16:27

Do you need to see the GP? Locally to me you self-refer to MW. Why not ask for a tel appt with the GP sooner and then they can refer you sooner if they don't need to see you.

anotherdayanothername1 · 21/05/2015 16:31

Depends on the person

I would need a blood test immediately and would potentially have to up doses on some drugs I take. If I didn't I might have a miscarriage by 9 weeks

If you don't have any health issues you'll probably be fine

LorryHen · 21/05/2015 16:34

Makemine, I had to go to the GP to be referred which was a pointless ball ache! I wish everywhere was self refer

shinysparklythings · 21/05/2015 16:39

If no health issues, shouldn't be any problems.

I was 9+6 when I had mine.

ChucksAhoy · 21/05/2015 16:57

This is absolutely fine - they recommend the first appointment between 8 - 10 weeks where I am.

anotherdayanothername1 · 21/05/2015 17:08

Pls do check with your doc op - your area might say nine weeks is fine, but so did my doctor and then it's only after a miscarriage anyone bothered to tell me I should have done various things much sooner!

Lorelei353 · 21/05/2015 17:10

My GP won't see you until you're 9 weeks pregnant. I phoned up in a state of high excitement at 5 weeks and they told me that on the phone. My MW appt was very soon after and I was booked in for a scan at 12 weeks so it all happened on schedule.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 21/05/2015 18:05

I'm in a self refer area, it seems like a much better system. My first midwife appointment is at 9 weeks.
