C Section With General Anesthetic??? Severe placenta Previa

Been o see the consultant oday. Now 34 weeks and have Placenta Previa Major which basically means lacenta is still directly over the cervix and in the way for normal deivery and in quite a bad place for a c section.
Consultant said they would prefer me to have a general raher than a spinal as it's a high risk c section. A general would mean obviously I would be asleep and Dh would not be allowed in the room.
I said no, I want spinal but if it went pear shaped I would allow a general. Dh shitting himself now I have another 4 weeks of worrying about bleeding let alone the thought of heamorraging during delivery.
Anyone had a section with severe placenta previa??
Anyone had c section with a general??

magnolia1,

I don't know if I can help you, but don't worry about the bonding. When my sister had her first section she was allergic to the anetesia and started throwing up while she was still on the table (imagine the pain). She was sick for the whole first day, and my bil was in charge of the baby. It was sweet to see the two of them together bonding. They still have a special bond.

Thanks Mears They have said its left lateral??? And could be 'nicked' by the scalpel? Would you still say have a GA if not completely Anterior?
Will talk to Dh about popping baby on breast with help of midwife If I am still groggy etc...

To be honest I would take advice from your obstetrician and anesthetist. You should have consultants present at your delivery because of the high risk of bleding. Ask to speak to them both. If they advise you to have GA then that is what I would do. However the main thing is that you are involved in the discussion and understand their reasoning.

mears · 09/11/2006 22:57

It is better to do a GA initailly than do one under emergency conditions. However, it may be that the anaesthetist would be happy to do that - he needs to be involved in the discussion - not just obstetrician.

I think what mears has said is important, as is the view of your consultant. Like I said before they're covering their own backs but they're also going with what they feel confident with. My consultant told me of the risks but he was also happy to do c-sections with anterior pp under spinals - and I had every confidence in my consultant, but if he'd also advised me against a spinal I'd have trusted that he knew what he was on about.

the lady in the bed next to me had severe pp and used to disapper with her husband to go shopping at mothercare. they could never find her, she'd appear at tea time as if she'd been there all along. just though i'd add that

Awwwww don't blame her tbh, it must be so hard for ladies who have to stay in for weeks before birth. I am pretty pleased I have got this far without any hospital stays

Most of the consultants when I was in hospital (6 weeks for dd1, 3 wks for dd2) were fab. I used to go for trips out with their permission - it was like being in boarding school with passes out to buy tuck in the village! But one of the consultants was a complete nutter. He lives with his mum (he's in his 50s) and used to regularly say 'I cannot allow you to leave this hospital. The trouble is you ladies think you're fine, then you go and have sex at home and all sorts of problems occur.' !!!!! WTF! As if 1) sex is top of the list when you've been allowed out for 2 hours and you're the size of a small European country 2) You know sex could kill you and/or the baby but you think 'oh go on then!'

He was mental! The day before dd2 was born we wanted to take dd1 to the cinema for our last outing as a family of 3. He was on duty that day and forbade me form going. He said the ride in the car going over bumps could 'set me off'. When he went out the midwife came in and said 'well, of course if you were to leave without my knowledge, I wouldn't be able to do anything about it...[wink}' so I went!!

Hi there,
I am a consultant anaesthetist( although intensive care and not obstetrics) and would agree with the advice you have been given as the risk of bleeding is quite high. The wish for a GA would NOT be taken likely as most anaesthetists and surgeons would prefer to do CS under a regional technique. I also realise it is terrifying to be put to sleep and not what you have had planned for your pregnancy but as mears said, having to have a spinal converted to a GA once the CS is underway is much worse both for you and for your DH. The reason for the GA is exactly as said, to allow the Surgeon to have more control and ultimately it is the safety of you the mother and that of your baby which is of the upmost importance. It is far better to be very overly cautious than to take any risks with the both of you.
I am having to have a CS next Wed, and am still utterly terrified, despite being an anaesthetist. You just want everything to go alright and for the experience to be pleasant and for your baby to be fine. But sometimes nature can be unkind and then it is much better to follow your consultant's advice and have a safe delivery for all of you.
Once the baby is out and checked over by the midwife and Paeds team, the baby will go out to recovery for cuddles with DH until you come out into recovery yourself.
Be brave and try not to worry.

maybe worth talking to the midwifes on the ukmidwifery group .

They will able to tell you what generally happens in this situation
