Overdue with first baby (41+1). After 2 rounds of acupuncture, a sweep, walking, bouncing, essential oils and herbal supplements, there is still no sign of baby.

Have resigned myself to being induced on Friday (12 days over). I'm stressing because I feel as though labour is going to be really loonngg and I'm going to be stuck at the bloody hospital for days Sad

Would appreciate hearing your experiences of being induced (particularly when over due). Long labour? Short labour? Quick to get going?

I had one of each!

My first induction with ds1 was blissful, pessary at 8pm, contracting by midnight, had some pethidine and slept til 6am, woke at 6cms and he was delivered at 10.35am

2nd induction was a disaster. Induced over 4 days, propess, then pessary then ARM.
Laboured for 12 hours with no progress and ended up with a CS Hmm

good luck Smile

Thank you for sharing. Good to know that first baby + induction doesn't have to mean hours of waiting. Can I ask what an ARM is??

Ds1 was my second baby. Didn't get induced with no.1
ARM is artificial rupture of membranes (break your waters)

pocketsized · 18/05/2015 17:12

I was induced a week early, didn't need the pessary as they were able to reach to break waters (ARM). That was done at 2am, and LO was born at 10am, labour was straightforward, had to have some vontouse at the end, but that was due to DDs distress (which was part of the reason for the induction, rather than caused by it) Overall is was pretty positive, and quick!

MrsWooster · 18/05/2015 17:24

one loooongg, one very quick! in both cases it took a couple of days to get started so don't expect to go in and it all kick off... be prepared to wait and once proper contractions start then it can be just a matter of luck like a 'normal' labour. I would try and get your head round it first; I'd had the lovely nct classes and was heartset on lavender oil and whale music... the classes had warned a bit darkly about the 'cascade of intervention'. it was definitely a cascade and it was Intervention and there were no whales... BUT my beautiful boy arrived, regardless of drips and monitors and, after a bit of mourning for the whales a d the fantasy birth, I realised that whatever it takes, the result is the thing.

At my hospital they keep you in after starting the induction, so I'm dreading hours of waiting without even being in labour / having contractions. I'm not sure if they let DP stay the whole time either if you're not in labour? Urgh! Plus my "good sized" baby is growing bigger every day! Plus I'm boorreeddd!! Oh I'm such a happy bunny Hmm

Wooster - I know it will be worth it when they are here, I just wish something would hurry up and happen.

Silver it is standard to be kept in once they start the process, usually on the ante natal ward. Ask midwife about hours your partner will be allowed to be there, here it is only certain hours like visiting time.

Induction is really unpredictable, hopefully baby will decide he's ready and come before ??

Hi. I was induced 14 days over. I had my waters broken about 4.30pm then went on the drip. It all happened very fast after that and baby was born at 7.30pm. It was fine, good that it didn't last for ages. Slightly shocking and quick but all good.

buntingbingo · 18/05/2015 18:16

Also I wasn't sent to the ward. I went straight into my own room but I guess that depends on how busy they are at the time.

TSSDNCOP · 18/05/2015 18:22

There was much hanging around, but I didng find that stressful TBH. I did nearly kick the consultsnt in the teeth when he broke my waters though. Fuck me that smarted!

CurlsLDN · 18/05/2015 19:20

I was induced on my due date (pre eclampsia, first babY.
It was long, which I was worried about. Like you I Hated the thought of waiting around for days. However, it all went by in a bit of a blur, it's busy on the wards so lots to keep you 'entertained'. Although I was kept in I was encouraged to walk so went to the coffee shop and the park next door a lot, and watched a lot on the ipad.
After two pessaries I had my waters broken, didn't hurt at all. Ds arrived a few hours later with no further intervention (except epidural which I chose early on)

My dh was allowed to stay with me the entire time

crispiecrunchie · 18/05/2015 19:22

I was induced at 9 days late. I had really resisted it but it wasn't as bad as I expectedly. Only needed one pessary and contractions started within 30 mins. Was 24 hours before dd appeared but I did have painkillers over night - diamorphine and slept some of it. Ended up with the drip as baby wouldn't turn and they thought stronger contractions might turn her. Honestly was not as bad as I had expected and I'd be much less worried about a second induction this time round. Now I'm 42 so suspect a bit pressure to be induced of I don't go early

FoxSticks · 18/05/2015 19:47

I had a pessary at 9am, dd was born 12 hours later. Much nicer than my non induced, far too quick, second labour three years later. I didn't end up having an epidural, cs or being unable to establish bf, or any of the other things I was told would happen by our nct teacher Wink

SilverHoney · 18/05/2015 22:25

Thanks all for your stories. I know everyone's birth experience is so different from one to the next. I've been lucky with an easy pregnancy, but now feel like my body just does not want to do the next bit!

HazleNutt · 19/05/2015 08:29

7 days late - I'm abroad and they don't do any of the sweeps or pessaries, straight to drip and waters broken. It was very intense, contractions went form 0 to 100 in a second - but the whole thing was done in 5 hours.

HotFudge87 · 19/05/2015 09:40

Induced on due date with pessary at 11am. Did loads of walking around hospital etc. Checked at 2125 as contractions just starting. Told I was 1cm. 2152 baby was here! Xxx

MayfairMummy · 19/05/2015 10:01

Silverhoney,
Remember you've still got 4 days for labour to kick off... that's a lifetime at this point in the pregnancy!

DS1 was 41+3; DS2 was 41+6... DC3 currently 41+2.... whilst i'm sure i'll go in to be induced if she doesn't come out by 42 (and i don't actually want to be induced, i have to say; as it will take away my planned HB), i also personally think worrying about it will slow things rather than speed them up Smile... we're just animals after all, and they tend to give birth when they've got a cosy, safe place to relax in....

Mayfair - I know, and I've been really positive, very little worries about labour / birth. But it's getting hard to maintain that attitude now that the days are dragging on...

Just had my second sweep, she thought baby might be back to back? First time anyone has said that? Oh well, time to go walking - again!!

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 19/05/2015 14:07

My induction took 23hrs; my sisters took 4! It's variable ime :)

MayfairMummy · 21/05/2015 04:51

SilverHoney, any luck yet? I've had 3 sweeps (4th planned for today); still waiting though ... are you doing any better than me?
