Advice needed re TTC before holiday

My DH and I want to start TTC for our first this month. Only spanner in the works is that we have a two week pre-baby holiday booked in October to Japan. Likely to involve lots of sight seeing on foot.

If our TTC is successful between now and then, I would be either 20-22, 15-17 or 11-13 weeks pregnant.

What are your experiences of pregnancy at these stages? Would I be mad to be planning lots of walking at 22 weeks? I'm guessing 11-13 wks isn't advisable as morning sickness could ruin the experience. Should 15-17 weeks be reasonably comfortable?

Obviously this is all hypothetical, it might take us a long time to conceive, but if your experiences suggest the holiday would be very uncomfortable then we will think about waiting a few more months before TTC :(

I went backpacking through Russia and Ukraine at 5 months pregnant. No problems at all. I would definitely go but make sure your travel insurance covers you for any pregnancy related issues. enjoy your last baby free holiday!

I'd wait, you can't predict how you'll feel from a health point of view but long flight, different food could give you extra anxiety and mean you won't enjoy it as much. A last carefree holiday would be great.

I went to Paris at 13 weeks and it was hard work. My morning sickness was starting to subside but I was struggling with my appetite, couldn't eat all the decent French food like pate, soft cheeses, steaks, wine. In addition, I was exhausted so sight seeing was hard work. 15+ weeks would have been better but I'd still have been screwed over the foodfood.

I'd be inclined to TTC in Japan. However, you might escape morning sickness and exhaustion

I'm another who'd wait, morning sickness is awful, I was on holiday last year 15 weeks pregnant and spent most of it flat out on the sofa because I was still so nauseous 24/7.

I wouldn't wait, but that's down to the experience of it taking me three years to get one baby.

I did a three week US road trip/tour at 25-28 weeks pregnant. It was fine.

It's a matter of weighing up the pros and cons for each.

TTC - there's a real risk you'll feel really sick and/or tired which could either take the edge off or ruin your holiday. I think you will be a bit restricted on food - some fish to avoid/limit - take a look at the nhs website, but I wouldn't feel available to just order anything the way I normally would! You may feel fine - but impossible to predict.

Not ttc - you have to wait another 4 months. Only you can know how difficult you'll find this.

My experience. I got pregnant first month both times. First pregnancy I had a miscarriage in March this year at 11 weeks. Now 10 weeks pregnant and just been to California between weeks 6-8. I was fine and able to walk 10 miles a day in the national parks. Food restrictions made eating out frustrating and I missed being able to drink. We're off to Spain when I'll be around 22 weeks (another sightseeing /walking holiday - no lying on the beach) and Im open minded that I will need to miss out on the chorizo, iberico ham and Rioja and potentially alter our planned itinerary and have plenty of siestas!

It's a personal decision - check the terms of your travel insurance and airline. We normally go away at least twice a year and pregnancy was never going to stop us. But with a holiday of a lifetime like Japan - I'd be minded to wait.

I would wait - we planned a holiday knowing we were going to TTC afterwards. Knowing how my pregnancy has been now (I'm currently 25weeks) I would not have been able to enjoy the holiday.
You can be proactive in preparing to TTC before then however - tracking ovulation, taking pre conception vitamins, coming off any contraceptive pills etc. that's what I did.
But like has been said - every pregnancy is different so you just won't know how you'll be
