Not a lot really, they might give you some leaflets on healthy eating, tell you to take folic acid and ask you where you want to give birth. With my 2nd pregnancy I just self referred to the hospital on the website and skipped the GP bit as I've only got one local hospital so it was an easy choice for me!

AbbeyRoadCrossing · 13/05/2015 18:02

Oh and congratulations

jimijack · 13/05/2015 18:04

Not much, bit of a come down tbh

Here you don't get to have any contact with midwife until after 9 weeks, even then it's every couple of months.

strawberry01 · 13/05/2015 18:07

I went to the doctor who said congratulations (didn't check for pregnancy- took my word) and referred me to midwife. Had booking appointment at about 12 weeks and first scan at 15 weeks. I found out almost straight away 4 weeks so it was a looooong wait.

MissTwister · 13/05/2015 18:12

Congratulations!!!

I had a doctor appointment and he just ran through the basics then I had the MW booking in appointment at about 7 or 8 weeks.

It's an exciting time, take it easy and relax!

That's usually at the first midwife appt called booking in. You consent to it of course so its not compulsory, but it checks for a lot of problems so up to you if you have them

Ladypug · 13/05/2015 18:53

Hi MiissMartiin,

I was terrified too - I faint at even the thought of blood and I've now had 4 vials of blood taken and not fainted once - it's better than you think and is over in literally seconds. It helped me to say immediately I wanted blood done first so I could relax x

MiissMartiin · 13/05/2015 19:28

aww Thanks you've put my mind at restSmile ... ladypug im exactly the same hehe ..watched my nan have a blood test and i fainted Blush

If you're nervous around needles, tell the person doing the bloods. They will need to take them of course, but they may have a recliner chair or a trolley you can lie on if you get a bit squiffy. Honestly, it doesn't hurt, just look the other way and distract yourself by looking around the room.

MiissMartiin · 13/05/2015 20:43

I'll be definitely letting them know! .. Grin

At our surgery, the Drs don't want to see you unless you have a problem or an existing medical condition that needs extra care in pregnancy etc.

You just phone reception and ask for a booking-in appointment with the midwife. This takes place at around 8 weeks.

MiissMartiin · 13/05/2015 21:25

will they not need to confirm the pregnancy?- (even though tests are positive) i have no medical or health conditions ect. . ill call them tomorrow and see what they say Smile thanks!!

They just believe you! I found that rather weird with my first, but the over the counter tests are so good these days they don't double check

MiissMartiin · 14/05/2015 07:38

I found it so weird that they you tell them that you are pregnant and they just believe you.... I kept thinking on the run up to the 12 week scan that they were going to tell me I wasn't actually pregnant and it was all in my mind.

My MW wasn't too great at blood tests (I have deep veins so I wasn't a normal patient), so I went to the hospital, and blood nurses are AMAZING, they are in and out before you know what has hit you, they do it 100s of times a day (literally). Just don't look and you will be fine

MiissMartiin · 14/05/2015 10:18

oh that's good! glad you think it wansnt too bad Grin .. well hopefully ill be okay cz i can see my veins pretty visable on my arms hopefully it won't have to go too far in!! blood tests are the only thing that make me freak out! haha I've not even thought about giving birth Shock well that's along time away yet!
