Hi all,

Hoping someone can help. I'm 28 + 3 and the last week I've been getting pain on the top of my bump usually comes and goes. The last 2 / 3 days its been really sore and this morning its been sore since I got up with no real ease. I took Losec (in case it was heartburn) but that hasn't helped.

Does anyone know what it is and is it normal to get these pains?

Could it be the start of Braxton Hicks? With Dd1 I had them from about 25 weeks and it was like a band tightening around my bump.

Give your midwife a ring, she will be able to help.

PebbleTTC · 12/05/2015 10:35

Hi Duckbilled, would they be painful and constant?

Could it be a head or a bum sticking out? I find this quite painful at 32 weeks.

Please please ring the number on the front of your maternity notes.

You need to see some one face to face about this.
It could be a thousand things, only an expert can tell you what it is after examination.

It's the only way of putting your mind at rest and ensuring good health for you & baby.
X

It could also be rib flare, I'm suffering from this quite badly at 31wks and started around that 28wk point. Mine feels mostly right sided and very sharp ache type pain that lasts for a minute or two, dies off then comes right back again same place about 10mins later. Affects my two lowest intercostal spaces. Very uncomfortable and worse when sitting/lying down?

I thought indigestion to at first as seemed to be worse after eating, but nothing took it away. Now looking back it was simply because my stomach added to the pressure in my upper abdomen and the outward pressure on my ribs after eating

PebbleTTC · 12/05/2015 10:50

The pain is more central than one particular side, its about 1 hand width under boobs right on top of bump.

its really uncomfortable and painful!

I had something very similar to this with my last pregnancy, it was almost as if my stomach muscles were bruised or torn. It was painful even to touch! Definitely go and get it checked out properly. Might just be one of the joys of pregnancy though!

duckbilled · 12/05/2015 11:24

They aren't constant in my experience.

PebbleTTC · 12/05/2015 12:33

The pain gets a bit better when I stand so maybe its pressure pain. Do you think it would be ok to take paracetamol for these pains?

Is there a little lump that you can feel where the pain is? I hope you don't have a hernia. I developed one in pregnancy it was a damn nuisance. It could be just be down to growing pressure on everything intra-abdominally and the position of the baby.

PebbleTTC · 12/05/2015 16:46

Hi, no lump but pain is still there all day, so miserable I keep having to stand up at my desk to try relieve the pain :(

You need to ring your hospitals triage or assessment unit and let them know. It could be nothing but it could be epigastric pain which can be a sign of pre eclampsia.

Bex174 · 12/05/2015 17:13

Thinking about it, my rib flare did start just at the centre which is why I grabbed at indigestion initially, it's only now it's contined that its turn to be more central-right, possibly due to the position of my babies now.

Definitely sounds like it to me if it's better when standing, as that's what relieves mine at the moment. If it was abdominal muscles, it tends to be the opposite, relieved when sat/lay down.

I never found paracetamol helped, but what can relieve it for a bit is to sit on one of those yoga balls and push your hips forward and stretch out your front ribs. Or simply reach upwards with your arms and take a few deep breaths. When sitting put a small pillow in the small of your back to stop slouching which can force ribs at front outwards over your bump. But unfortunately nothing I have tried makes it go and stay away, sorry :(

I'm being monitored closely for signs of pre-eclampsia and one of the things I have to watch out for is pain in my upper abdomen ams under my ribs.

Please, please go and be checked out at the maternity unit or at least call the number on the front of your maternity notes. If it's a pain you need painkillers for then they really need to see you. If it does turn out to be epigastric pain then they can monitor you and avoid any potential complications. If it's stretching then they can give you some advice on how to manage it. Paracetamol is fine to take but not to mask a pain that you don't know the origins of.

I'm home now lying on my left side and feel great! I was at gp yesterday but didn't have any of this pain but if it was pre eclampsia I'm sure she would have picked up something from that visit? Iv a big morning in work tomorrow but if I'm still feeling pain I'll ring hospital
