Stiff hands...

Has anyone else suffered with stiff hands during pregnancy?

I wake in the morning and my hands are really stiff but it eases off during the day although never fully goes away. My knuckle joints feel the worst.

My GP doesn't seem too concerned so I did my own research and it looks like carpal tunnel syndrome is quite common in pregnancy.

Just hope it isn't arthritis...

I had carpal tunnel syndrome and stiffness.

It's still here nearly a year later! But it is improving slowly.

My concern is arthritis, too, as it runs in my dad's side of the family.

My right thumb was never the same

Expat - sorry to hear you have suffered with it. It is good that it is improving though eh?

What did your doc suggest?

Shame it is in our hands...trust it to be in a part of the body that we use the most.

I never said anything to my doc abuot it.

I figured it would go away in its own time, which it has.

The thumb, I dunno. I wouldn't be surprised if it goes arthritic as I age - my grandmother had terrible arthritis in her old age, and my father and his two sisters have it to varying degrees (they're in their 60s and 70s now).

if it is excessive...think you can have splints to wear at night and rest your hand high up on some extra pillows.........but most docs leave well alone.........tis just one more thing to put up with then pregnant!

poppynic · 08/11/2006 12:17

I had this and got sent to the physio dept to get some splinty type things to wear at night. I don't know whether they did any good or not. Eventually it disappeared completely - about 1 to 2 years after the birth.

i had this too

the mw used to massage my hands which was ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!

i had quite puffy hands with fluid - it could just be that?

used to get dh to massage my hands too at nightime - he used ordinary hand cream to rub in

sometimes used the splints too

hth

It is really bad in the morning but wears off during the day but am left with constantly sore knuckles.

I will do the massage. My baby is due to be born in the next few weeks so hopefully won't have to suffer with it for too much longer.

Thanks for your tips guys.

I know how you feel I had this in last few weeks and then it came back when DD was 2 months but I also had/ have sore ankles and heels (!!!) first thing in the morning or if sitting for a while. GP did blood tests but all came back negative reckons it was hormones up and down which will settle sooner or later so she said !
Hope its sooner for you and good luck with the birth

I've got this too - really stiff hands when I wake up - wasn't sure what it was and it wears off within an hour so tbh was just leaving it. Good to know it's quite common

I had this, carpel tunnel syndrome, for the last couple of months of pregnancy, I got splints from the physio but found them so uncomfortable to sleep in I didn't bother and put up with the stiffness. It disappeared as soon as I had my dd, and hasn't come back (she's 18mths).

maxwellsmum · 08/11/2006 14:12

I had really stiff hands during pregnancy and wondered if it could be carpel tunnel but the doctor ruled it out.
I had to massage my hands often and it didnt stay around too long... or something even more annoying came and took its place!
