Ketones in urine, high blood pressure???

Yesterday at routine 36 week midwife appointment my BP was 140/90 and had trace glucose in urine. She asked me back today to repeat in case it was just a one off, today it was 135/95 and urine was clear. So I went to the hospital (as referred by cmw) for a BP profile. The first urine had 2+ ketones (!), BP didn't rise over 130/87 over the hour and the second urine was clear.

I am told not to worry but why did I have sugar in ketones in my urine? and are there any precautions taken if my BP continues to be higher than expected?

thanks

I don't know about your BP but my ketones were 3+ the other day. The consultant told me not to worry. Sometimes they can be high if you haven't eaten. I also have gestational diabetes and to prevent my sugar levels spiking I had basically given up carbs which they thought explained the ketones. They weren't concerned at all. They also found sugar in my urine the other day as well (first time ever even though I had been dealing with GD for 6 weeks) and on retesting it had gone. They can be trace and nothing to worry about.

I'm in exactly the same position - down to the BP reading. I was monitored at the hospital and again today, they just told me that a trace of ketones is completely fine and it just needs monitoring each week at the midwife. It can have something to do with being hungry. I also have a trace of protein which they have said is perfectly normal for this stage of pregnancy but doesn't happen for everyone.

With regards to the blood pressure, have they given you any advice? I've been told to look out for any excess swelling (worse than my usual puffy feet from being on them all day), flashing lights/visual disturbance and blinding headaches. Other than that they said a raise in blood pressure is normal too as long as it's not accompanied by any of those symptoms.

It's very confusing! I hope you're ok, I'm not used to things not being straight forward as my first pregnancy was a breeze.

I too have been dx with gestational diabetes so have been massively cutting the carbs and have now had a few incidences of ketones in my urine. I bought some of the DUS 10 strips so I can monitor at home, and the biggest thing that I have found is staying hydrated. I'm terrible for keeping hydrated at the best of times, and will almost forget to drink!

If I make an effort to keep hydrated then I no longer test positive for ketones, even with my heavily reduced carb in take. I suspect the sugar could well work the same too.

Regarding high BP, I'm an awkward one... if you measure me with a digital BP monitor you'll get a high reading, high enough that a few times in the past I've had to be monitored over a 24hr period, and there was talk of the potential for meds... however, measure me with an analogue cuff... no issues at all!! Never had a even a borderline high reading with an analogue cuff! Might be worth asking them to use an analogue cuff if your high one was done on a digital.

Hope you get it all sorted.
