First time mum, so unsure of what is best. So far all family say water and Cotton wool. But to be fair they didn't have water wipes in there time when they had us Hmm

Any suggestions/experiences??

There's no difference between cotton wool and frangrence free sensitive wipes except personal choice

umiaisha · 06/05/2015 19:38

I've used wipes on all 3 of mine from birth with no ill effect. But then I have also always bathed them daily, used johnsons baby bath, biological washing powder, talc and johnsons cream against all advice!

McFox · 06/05/2015 20:11

Ohdear, of course there's a difference. Have you never looked at the ingredients list of wipes, even sensitive ones? There's a massive difference and one that a lot of people wouldn't be willing to overlook for the sake of convenience.

sleeponeday · 06/05/2015 20:15

ohdear have you looked at the ingredients? Alcohol and preservatives are allergens for a lot of people and babies have very, very thin skin. How Huggies or whoever got away with claiming it is the same as water, I cannot understand. It's just a lie. Sure, lots of kids will be fine. Others won't.

Art & Co, we take a small flask of warm water in the car & a small bowl when we're not going to be near even a public loo. Works well.

sleeponeday · 06/05/2015 20:18

umiaisha you're really lucky! I can't even use normal non bio on anything in this house, these days. DS has eczema and anything but one sensitive brand flares it badly - he can't even manage Ecover. We're using the same regimen with DD in the hope her immune system isn't ever triggered, so she escapes his problems. I rather wistfully remember the days of own brand washing powders!

Tidypidy · 06/05/2015 20:20

In pound land you can get a pack of very soft baby flannels and an easy open lunchbox tub. Even if you buy 4 packs of flannels and the tub you've still only spent a fiver for the lot!

howabout · 06/05/2015 20:26

If you have eczema likelihood then definitely think cotton wool and water. We had to experiment with brands to get pleats which didn't drag when drying but yes drying is really important. Also later on watch out for people randomly using wet wipes on pfb hands and when dd1 started nursery at 3 I had to remind staff to make sure she was drying her hands properly after being in water. And just cos I am an old mother hen watch out for face painters using wipes on faces. Eczema control is all about prevention as I am sure you already know.

MuddyWellyNelly · 06/05/2015 20:49

Like others I've bought a single pack of water wipes for hospital then will move on to cheeky wipes. Will be using cloth nappies too though so it's an environmental driver for us, as I don't think sensitivity will be an issue. Re cost,

MuddyWellyNelly · 06/05/2015 20:52

Sorry... Re cost we've actually had the cheeky wipes bought as a gift from a family member who asked what we wanted. It felt at a more reasonable price point than to ask for a car seat or similar Wink.

ohdearitshappeningtome · 06/05/2015 23:46

Actually, the hospital where I had my baby did a research on this and it was proven!

ohdearitshappeningtome · 06/05/2015 23:46

Sleep, on your say so I'll let the midwives and research people know their research was wrong Confused

sleeponeday · 07/05/2015 00:55

Uh huh. Care to link to that peer reviewed independent research? In the interests of science, and all. Because funnily enough, what's been proven is that the preservatives they used were so likely to cause allergic reactions that last year they removed them from the formulations.

sleeponeday · 07/05/2015 00:56

They still use preservatives, of course. Just not methylisothiazolinone, the one proven to be causing an epidemic of skin reactions.

ohdearitshappeningtome · 07/05/2015 07:04

I will look for it but I don't know how to link. Just for your curiosity !

ohdearitshappeningtome · 07/05/2015 07:17

I can't link but search for university of Manchester cotton wool vs baby wipes study

sleeponeday · 07/05/2015 10:25

Thank you, have googled and found it. You don't think it at all of note that the study - which measured skin hydration after 4 weeks, no longer, and which studied one specific variety of one specific manufacturer's products: Johnson's Fragrance Free, which is unusual in the extreme in containing no alcohol - was funded entirely by the company in question?

And I don't mean to patronise, but you can't say one study proves anything, by itself. That's not how science works. The whole point is to be able to prove something over and over again before a conclusion of such certainty can be reached, and even then, there are usually outlier studies finding aberrations - just look at the evidence on breastfeeding, for example. If midwives actually told you, based on this study, which measured specific endpoints only over a very short timeframe, that there's no difference between using wipes, any wipes, and water, and "it's proven" then they are in my opinion being incredibly irresponsible.

ohdearitshappeningtome · 07/05/2015 10:49

Op. You choose what's better for you. Our opinions are exactly that opinions. You will find what's best for you and your family.

Good luck for when baby comes

HoldenCaulfield80 · 07/05/2015 10:54

Morrisons so some Mild As Water wipes which we've used with DD from birth. 79p a packet, never had a rash, would highly recommend! Lie too short for cotton wool and water...

Tranquilitybaby · 07/05/2015 12:17

I'm taking both into hospital, would only use water wipes, the other so called sensitive wipes are full of chemicals.

Water wipes were 3 for £5 last week when I went in Boots.

IfYouWereARiverIdLearnToFloat · 10/05/2015 09:13

I've just bought four 9 packs of WaterWipes on offer in Boots - down to £13 plus I got a 10% off code they're doing for the Royal Baby this week so actually paid £11.70. I added two swaddle gro bag things & some ChildsFarm bath things, nappy rash cream etc & paid £78 for £120 worth of stuff plus joined Parenting Club to get extra Advantage Card Points.

Worth a look if people are considering WaterWipes...
